Awards presentation on Broadway features alumni performances

Because the 2017 Alumni Association Special Recognition Awards Ceremony was held in Manhattan's Theater District, we thought it would be only fitting for the event to have a Broadway feel. Alumni in attendance were treated to a showcase by Binghamton University alumni who followed careers in musical theater. You can see videos of these tremendous performances below.

The event began with a special Binghamton University rendition of the song "Tradition" from Fiddler on the Roof, led by Pat McGuinness '85, who wrote the lyrics.

Actress and soprano Rita Harvey (introduced by her husband Neil Berg '86) sang "Fairytale" and "Over the Rainbow." She had performed on Broadway in the role of Hodel in the revival of Fiddler on the Roof, starring Rosie O'Donnell, Harvey Fierstein and Alfred Molina. She made her Broadway debut performing the lead role of Christine Daee in The Phantom of the Opera, after more than two years performing the role with the second national tour.

Actress and director Joanne Borts '82 (introduced by Neil Berg '86) performed "Before the Parade Passes By." She had appeared in the original Broadway cast of Once, R&H’s Cinderella with Eartha Kitt, and Fiddler on the Roof with Topol, Harvey Fierstein and Theodore Bikel. Off-Broadway credits include Hello Muddah Hello Fadduh, On Second Avenue, The Golden Land, Kids & Yiddish, and Showboat at Carnegie Hall.

The alumni ensemble closed the event with "Seasons of Love" from the musical Rent. Berg was the musical director and host for the evening. He's the composer/co-lyricist, along with Pulitzer Prize/TONY-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan, of the award-winning new rock musical The 12. It opened at the Denver Center in the spring of 2015 to unanimous rave reviews, and won the 2015 HENRY Award for best new play or musical.
