Golf Classic engages alumni, supports students

Since she was a young girl, Charlotte Crinnin '19 had heard Binghamton University stories from her father, Gerard Crinnin '93. Her positive feelings about the University, which stemmed from her father's love for Binghamton, were confirmed during her first visit to campus during her junior year of high school.
"After my initial tour, I already knew that I wanted to go here," said Crinnin, a psychology and German major from Fredonia, N.Y. "At the morning assembly, one of the speakers said 'Binghamton just feels like home,' and I completely understood what he meant."
Crinnin is one of two recipients of the 2017-18 Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship, which benefits immediate family members of Binghamton University alumni.
The Alumni Golf Classic, held Aug. 4, at The Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, raised funds to support the scholarship. About 125 alumni and friends enjoyed a day of golf. Team Henderson (pictured below from left to right: Doug Henderson '85, Dean Casterline, Bob Brown and Matt Shaughnessy '87) won the tournament.
Held each summer, the Alumni Golf Classic brings the local and University communities together. After several years of fundraising, the Alumni Association endowed the Legacy Scholarship and it was awarded for the first time in the 2014-15 academic year.
Alex Fleischman '19, a biomedical engineering major from Fort Lee, N.J., said his mother's Binghamton stories were a big influence on him. Florence Friedman '81 founded the business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi at Binghamton and often told her son that college is a time to influence something important to you.
The son took her advice to heart, launching the Binghamton University Community Taekwondo Program. Binghamton students go into local elementary schools twice a week to teach children about the foundations of martial arts.
"I wanted to make an impact on the same place I heard so many stories about," said Fleischman. "For my mother, it was business. To me, it's martial arts. I hope I've made as big an impact on this University as she has."
