Regional chapter spotlight
By Steve Seepersaud
New season, new scenery; for the first time, the D.C. Metro Chapter gathered at Washington's Sauf Haus Bier Hall & Garten. At this summer kick-off June 15, the group of nearly 30 alumni celebrated by enjoying fine German craft beers as well as conversation about life at and after Binghamton. The chapter especially encouraged May graduates to attend this event as part of their welcome into the Alumni Association.

The D.C. Metro Chapter then held its first-ever cruise July 27 on board the Spirit of Washington. About 20 alumni enjoyed a three-hour trip on the Potomac River with a full dinner, music, dancing and great views of DC landmarks. This event was another occasion to welcome Class of 2017 graduates into the Alumni Association and help them feel at home in new surroundings.
"Many of our event attendees are new to the DC area, having recently graduated, relocated or are here for a summer internship," said Christina Ritter '99, chapter leader. "Our gatherings are great networking opportunities for both seasoned and new professionals."
Rainy weather June 15 led to a change in plans for the Rochester Chapter, but didn't dampen anyone's enthusiasm. The alumni brought their potluck picnic indoors to enjoy reconnecting with friends and making new ones. To make the picnic in Perinton distinctly Binghamton, they served up spiedies.
"Although the weather didn't cooperate, we still had a great time," said Diana Weber '13, chapter co-leader. "Alumni talked about what has been keeping them busy lately, their plans for the summer and, of course, reminisced on time spent on campus."
With more than 3,000 Binghamton University graduates, the Albany area has a good deal of #BingPride, so the Alumni Association plans to increase its outreach in the Capital District. On June 15, about 40 alumni gathered at City Beer Hall in Albany for a chapter re-launch.
"The attendance doubled our initial expectations, and the energy in the room was palpable," said Brian Rudolph '10, chapter leader. "With class years ranging from 1977 to 2017, alumni from different decades and majors reminisced about their Binghamton experiences. Our next steps include planning a late summer or fall event and identifying opportunities for us to engage with students."
The Metro New York Chapter followed up on the enormous success of last year's Harbor Lights cruise with another evening on the waters of Manhattan June 22. More than 300 alumni came together for a three-hour party that offered up great company, terrific views of the city's most iconic landmarks and many opportunities for group photos and selfies. See more photos from this event at the Alumni Association's Facebook page.
"This year's cruise was once again a great success," said Dan Cherico '08, chapter co-leader. "As our chapter has grown over the last four years, our event calendar offers plenty of events throughout the year that appeal to different types of alumni. What the cruise has become is a signature event appealing to alumni of all backgrounds, industries and ages. We couldn't have asked for better weather, and the crowd was great. What better way to celebrate Binghamton than by taking in views of one of the premier cities in the world with several hundred alumni of the premier public university."
