At this point of the year, if you haven't actually played a round of golf, you've probably dusted off the clubs and hit the practice range once or twice. Before your calendar fills up with golf dates and tournaments, plan on joining us Aug. 4, for the annual Alumni Golf Classic.
Once again, the tournament will be held at The Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, one of the premier courses in the Binghamton area. This event is open to the public and brings together the University and local communities to raise funds for the Alumni Association's Legacy Scholarship Fund, which benefits the children of Binghamton University graduates. The Alumni Golf Classic uses a captain-and-crew format and offers a number of contests.
"I love this tournament because it allows all of us to come together for a fun day of competition," said Brianna King '11, MS '13, who plays in the Alumni Golf Classic and serves on the planning committee. "We have amazing support from local businesses and alumni. There are many opportunities throughout the day to compete in contests that are great for people like me who aren't the most skilled."
After several years of raising funds, the Alumni Association created the endowed scholarship and presented its first award in the 2014-15 academic year. Amanda Freno, a senior from Old Bridge, N.J., who will Sunday, May 21, was one of the two scholarship recipients for this academic year. After graduation, she will pursue a master's degree in social work.
"The scholarship allowed me to focus on completing my degree in psychology and English literature without worrying as much about the cost of my education," Freno said. "I'm so proud to be able to carry on my family tradition of attending Binghamton University. My parents [Don '90 and Tracy '91] both attended, and we visited the school many times throughout my childhood."
We're seeking foursomes and sponsors; visit the Alumni Golf Classic website for more information and to register now.
