Second Annual Alumni Giving Challenge
By Dave O'Brian
The 21 Binghamton varsity teams took part in the Second Annual Athletics Alumni Giving Challenge, competing against each other to raise funds for their sports and the athletics department. The campaign was held Sept. 29 and the results were announced during the Homecoming Tailgate on Saturday afternoon.
The Athletics Alumni Giving Challenge was held from Sept. 12-30 and was made possible by the generosity of William H. Groner '77, who sponsored the event. The goal of the competition was to increase participation among former Binghamton student-athletes who contribute to the Athletics Department.
The top two Binghamton athletic programs that had the highest participation rate received prizes. A formula that took into account the number of donors of a specific team and the total number of alumni for that program was used to determine the participation rate.
For the second consecutive year, the men's lacrosse team won the first-place prize of $5,000 towards their program with 48.8 percent alumni participation.
"I am really excited that we have an alumni group that is behind our program," head coach Kevin McKeown said. "They are invested in our program not just financially but they are interested in our players and helping them get to where they want to go in their future."
The second-place award of $2,000 was given to the women's lacrosse program, with 37.2 percent alumni participation. In addition, the women's lacrosse program earned another $1,000 with the highest percentage improvement from last year.
"We are incredibly grateful of the support by our alumni this year," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "The Alumni Giving Challenge has allowed us to re-engage and better become connected with our alumni in addition to benefiting our program."
There were 540 gifts received as part of the Alumni Giving Challenge. Included in that figure were 88 new donors and 220 alumni who graduated in the last decade.
"We are grateful to the generous athletics alumni who once again contributed during the giving challenge." Deputy Director of Athletics Dennis Kalina said. "This event brought together alumni from seven decades who showed their passion and pride in order to assist the current generation of student-athletes. We sincerely appreciate the generosity of these individuals."
