The B-Healthy Committees

Operations

The Healthy Campus Initiative has been charged by the Vice President of Student Affairs and is supervised by the Assistant Vice President for Health and Wellness. The structure of B-Healthy consists of the following subgroups:

Executive Board 

The Executive Board consists of members of senior management in Student Life and Academic Affairs, as well as campus leaders in health and wellness focused departments. The Executive Board provides strategic direction for integrating the Healthy Campus tenants into Binghamton University’s educational mission by developing policies and programs to enhance the academic environment. The Executive Board is chaired by the Assistant Vice President for Health and Wellness. Membership includes: Vice President for Student Affairs, Vice President for Operations, Associate VP and Dean of Students, Provost’s academic designee ,  Director of Health Promotion & Prevention Services and the Steering Committee Chair. 

Leadership Team

The Leadership Team will consist of the Steering Committee Chair and the Sub-Committee Chairs, along with student representation. The Leadership Team is chaired by the Assistant Vice President for Health and Wellness. The Leadership Team provides oversight for and may share the committee work among team members. This allows everyone to stay current with the work of the committees and enhances initiatives through expert input.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee serves as the campus wide leadership board for the Healthy Campus Initiative. It consists of representatives from numerous departments and programs and reflects our cross-divisional collaborations. The chair of the Steering Committee is appointed by the Executive Board. Membership to the Steering Committee is reviewed by the Leadership Team on an annual basis to ensure that the key constituent areas are represented. Each department/program area is limited to one representative on the Steering Committee, unless otherwise determined by the Executive Board or Leadership Team.  As of 2017, the Steering Committee is comprised of the following areas:

Sub-Committees

There are currently seven sub-committees associated with the Healthy Campus Initiative. Additional committees or task groups will be formed as needed or as interest develops.

Employee Health and Wellness

The Employee Health and Wellness Sub-Committee supports the Healthy Campus Initiative by focusing on improving employee engagement in health and wellness related activities and by exploring and improving institutional support, human resource policies, bargaining units’ participation and health benefits.  The sub-committee also encourages faculty/staff members to incorporate the Healthy Campus mission into their daily student encounters.

This committee is chaired by Cindy Cowden.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs

The Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Sub-Committee supports the Healthy Campus Initiative by working to   promote the prevention of high risk drug and alcohol use. This group will work in tandem with the Interdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Program (ITURP) who supports the tobacco free policy and cessation efforts on campus.

This committee is chaired by Bridget McCane Saunders. 

Mental Health

The Mental Health Sub-Committee is an interdisciplinary team supporting the Healthy Campus Initiative by promoting emotional and mental wellness, including suicide prevention. This group assesses current aspects of mental health on campus and implements programs that positively influence emotional well-being. 

This committee is chaired by Mark Rice.

Marketing/Branding

The Marketing Sub-Committee supports the Healthy Campus Initiative by communicating its endeavors and campus-wide health programming through use of the website, print materials and social media. The Sub-Committee ensures proper usage of the Healthy Campus logo and the implementation of our branding strategy. 

This committee is chaired by Sharon O'Neil.

Physical Activity

The Physical Activity Sub-Committee supports the Healthy Campus Initiative by working to bring physical activity awareness and education to the campus community through collaborative efforts. Emphasis is on increasing overall participation in exercise, connecting the benefits of physical activity to other health related issues and creating an environment that supports an active lifestyle. 

This committee is chaired by Jenna Moore.

Nutrition

The Nutrition Sub-Committee upholds the Healthy Campus Initiative's mission by working to create positive and engaging dining environments on campus that make selecting and attaining healthier food options easier for patrons.  

This committee is chaired by Alexa Schmidt.

Evaluation & Assessment

The Evaluation & Assessment Sub-Committee supports the Healthy Campus Initiative by reviewing existing campus data as part of an ongoing needs assessment, helping to prioritize programming efforts and resources and helping in the planning and implementation of new assessment tools.

This committee is chaired by TBA.
