11 Cool Things to Do Around Binghamton This Winter

You don't have to worry about dreary winter days here in Binghamton! Want to do something fun with your friends? Need to relax before the homework piles up? Looking for that perfect coffee spot downtown? Well, Binghamton is the place to be, with a variety of awesome winter activities to start your year off right.
Get some fresh air at the Nature Preserve

Need a breather from this crazy winter season? Take a walk in our campus backyard, at the Nature Preserve. It’s amazing what a little stroll in the fresh air can do. There’s always something new to discover here --just make sure to bring those gloves and scarfs!
Skate, hike and eat some s'mores

Take in some fresh country air and catch some epic pond hockey at Chenango Valley State Park during the Binghamton Pond Festival. Over the weekend of Feb. 10-12, skate on the moonlit pond and enjoy the lunar eclipse with a hike, telescope viewing, and--of course--s’mores over a bonfire. A portion of the proceeds fund local initiatives for youth mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
Get some cardio in with your sweetheart
Get your heart racing with your significant other this Valentine’s Day at the Run with Your Hun Valentine’s Day 5K, held at 11 a.m. Feb. 12 at the Vestal Coal House. There will be post-race chili, pastries and hot cocoa. Register now!
Hit the slopes at Greek Peak

Whether you like skiing, tubing or just enjoying the snow from a cozy lodge, Greek Peak is a must during the winter season. Make sure to go to College Night on Mondays, where students get a night pass for $15 with an ID.
Grab your sled
There are so many places to go sledding, whether it be at local parks such as Otsiningo or Chenango Valley, or even here on campus (traying, anyone?) Grab your sled and some friends, and you're sure to have fun.
Show your #BingPride at a basketball game
Grab all the green you can find and root on Binghamton's basketball teams this winter. Come for excitement, food, and even a selfie with Baxter! Get your tickets!
Explore local cafes

Feeling a lil' chilly? Get cozy in one of the many cafes downtown! Grab a house-roasted cup of coffee at Laveggios or a yummy bubble tea at the student-run Novel Tea. Open mic on First Fridays is always a treat at Strange Brew. And if you’re in the mood for something sweet, The Shop has the most heavenly crepes. There’s always something brewing downtown!
Go ice fishing
Bundle up, take an adventure and go ice fishing at the New York State Crappie Derby! Prizes are awarded every 15 minutes for the largest crappie. Enjoy the winter air on Feb. 18.
Warm up with some hot chili

Hungry? Cold? Head to the 19th Annual Great Downtown Ithaca Chili Cook-off, taking place on Feb. 11, and solve both problems! Along with tasty chili from approximately 30 restaurants, you can enjoy samples from local vendors, breweries and more!
