Undergraduate Admissions and the Fleishman Center team up!

A Facebook Live event we're sorry you missed!
Last Wednesday, Binghamton University’s Undergraduate Admissions Office hosted a Facebook Live event on the Binghamton Student Ambassadors page with the Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD). We answered viewers' questions on careers, internships and job opportunities -- it was a great time! In case you weren’t able to be there, here's some of the top questions that were asked…
What is the Fleishman Center and when does career advisory begin?
The Fleishman Center is an office in the heart of the Binghamton campus that offers advising to students on their internships, majors, careers, and professional development. Advising can begin anytime, even during the first semester of your freshman year! Walk-in hours are available Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is perfect if you're running around campus as much as I am! The staff at Fleishman, composed of both trained student interns and professional staff, can help with anything from checking your resume to running a mock interview in preparation. This year, Fleishman is taking students to Washington D.C. for the first time to visit employers! A favorite service of theirs is hireBING, which is an online network of jobs and internships postings that Binghamton students can access and apply to! It is actually how I found the application for my current internship in Undergraduate Admissions.
When do most students do their internships?
Depending on the opportunity, internships can begin as early as freshman year! Fleishman is a great resource for help on applications and interview preparation. Most people I know, including myself, began internships during their sophomore year; but if you have a busy schedule during the semester, don't worry! It's always possible to spend time in an internship over summer or winter break.
Is it possible to have an internship or job while studying abroad?
Yes! There are many programs that are available to students who choose to study abroad. For example, we have teamed up with the other SUNY schools to establish a network of internships available while that student is travelling. What that translates to is a much broader field of internships accessible to you! In addition, there is a vast array of resources available on the Fleishman Center website that center around ways to pursue internships and volunteer work internationally. Any of our career counselors and professionals can help you find the experience that best suits you!
Let's end with a fun question: What is your favorite activity you've done while at Binghamton?
Well, this is subjective, but I personally took an interest in several different areas on campus: I love being a coxswain on Binghamton Rowing, writing in the Opinions section of Pipe Dream (Did you know that we are the longest-standing newspaper on campus?), and of course working over here in Admissions! I have enhanced my professional development and met some incredible professionals and friends along the way.
Feeling extra bummed now that you missed this Facebook Live event? Don’t worry! Here is the link to watch it anytime. We will be hosting more in the future; feel free to let us know what you would like to know more about. As always, the Student Ambassadors page is open to questions anytime via the "Message" button!
