8 of the Coolest Jobs on Binghamton University’s Campus

With the end of the spring semester closing in, now is the best time to start thinking about on-campus employment for the fall, and, if you’re looking to stay in Binghamton, for the summer as well. During my eight semesters as a Binghamton student, I have worked in numerous positions, from a resident assistant to a tour guide to a news reporter. As I quickly approach graduation, these roles I held as an undergrad have given me the experience needed to secure a full-time gig. While searching on the Fleishman Career Center’s list of current openings, these were the jobs up for grabs that I found to be the most unique.

ESPN Livestream Production Assistant

media

Are you a big sports fan? Or maybe interested in the broadcasting field? As an ESPN Livestream Production Assistant, you’ll work behind the scenes operating on-screen graphics, replays, cameras, the audio board and more to produce live broadcasts of Bearcat sporting events on ESPN 3 and ESPN+. I actually used to be a member of this team, and I can say, as someone with little sports knowledge, this was still an awesome experience that helped me break into the news industry. I even learned a thing or two about basketball. Learn more about the role here.

Blue Bus Driver

BU bus stop

Since I was a first-year student, I’ve always thought that the being a Blue Bus Driver was one of the coolest things you could do. In addition to having the coolest whip on campus, you also get an opportunity to earn a New York State Class B Commercial Drivers License in order to operate one of these big rigs. OCC Transport does require one year of active, licensed driving experience and a clean driving record, but getting to travel around Bing in one of those sweet rides looks like a good gig to me.

Late Nite General Staff

Late Nite Binghamton

My friend Sarah and I have countless memories of getting on the karaoke mic at Late Nite, and the people that make it happen for us are our heroes. Help create weekly nights of fun for students like us as a Late Nite General Staff Member. Binghamton Late Nite has everything from laser tag to petting zoos to giant inflatables in their programming each week. As part of this team, you’ll be responsible for brainstorming events, preparing the venue, and helping the events run smoothly. Getting paid to have fun? Doesn’t sound too bad.

Art Museum Guard

BU art exhibit

The Binghamton Art Museum has a permanent collection of over 4,000 objects, including everything from paintings to sculptures from around the world spanning 5,000 years. These pieces have been selectively acquired over 50 years and the Art Museum needs students to serve as Art Museum Guards to keep everything secure. To be able to say that you guarded artwork that was thousands of years old would be a great conversation starter during a job interview, don’t you think?

First Year Peer Success Coach

Professor and student

You can help new students set themselves up for success working in this role with First Year Programs. First Year Peer Success Coaches help new students transition to college life through academic, social and professional mentorship. This role will work with UNIV 101 and UNIV 103 courses that are designed for students to explore and develop skills necessary for successful college life. As an RA, I have seen the importance of peer-to-peer mentorship. It’s been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life, and this is a great opportunity to make that same impact.

Intramural Sports Official

Binghamton track

Flag football, basketball, dodgeball, soccer, softball and volleyball are all sports that Campus Recreation offers at the intramural level, and they can’t happen without students reffing the games. I have friends that do this job right now and they always sound so cool saying, “I have to go ref softball in 20 minutes.” Wearing that snazzy referee uniform would be enough to get me on board. Training sessions are provided for all Intramural Sports Officials, so no experience is necessary.

Admissions Summer Tour Guide

Campus tour

As a tour guide myself, I might be a little biased, but it’s hard to beat the best job on campus. You could play a crucial role in recruiting the future of Binghamton University by being a Tour Guide this summer, one of the most popular times for campus visits. This role is suited for students who are enthusiastic about Binghamton and are ready to share their stories with prospective students and their families. I have met some of the most interesting people out on tour, and you’d get to show families around during Binghamton’s beautiful summers.

Ropes Course Assistant

Ropes Course

One of our hidden gems on campus is the high ropes course, and you could get paid to work with it all summer long. Campus Recreation is looking for a Ropes Course Assistant to help facilitate the course’s Outdoor Challenge Program. You’ll need to be willing to and able to navigate the outdoor terrain and learn belaying and rope handling skills, but this job has to be one of the best that campus has to offer. Having this experience in your back pocket would be a great fun fact to share during syllabus week.

The Student Employment Initiative

The Student Employment Initiative is a new program within the Fleishman Career Center that just launched this year which seeks to create more jobs for students and also elevate the experiences and skills that students gain through these positions.

If none of the roles on this list caught your eye, be sure to check out their growing list of part-time employment and the other career opportunities this new initiative offers. Now go out and build that work experience section on your resume. Good luck and have fun!
