Project Description
HIICAP Intern Description - BU Students

Organization: Action for Older Persons (non-profit)

Program: HIICAP - Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance
Program. We are New York State's federally funded State Health
Assistance Program (SHIP) and we educate the public on Medicare,
Medicare supplemental insurance, Medicare Advantage plans, and
prescription drug coverage.

Position: HIICAP Counselor - As a HIICAP Counselor, you meet one-on-one to
provide personal assistance to individuals on Medicare about what type
of health insurance is best for them. There are many options and the
complexity is difficult for many Medicare recipients to comprehend.

Background: This is a free service offered at our office at 200 Plaza Drive in
Vestal. Last year, we met with 2,773 individuals and saved them over
$2.9 million dollars by helping them select plans and enroll in programs
based on their needs. During Open Enrollment (October 15 -
December 7) we are extremely busy and need more volunteers.

Commitment: We need a commitment of 8-10 hours a week during the Fall
semester. There will be training and shadowing during September
and early October, passing a state HIICAP certification test, and then
counseling during Open Enrollment. If you want, you are welcome to
continue for the Spring semester. We would need a 3 hour block of
time between 9 am and 5 pm weekdays. We require that you take this
opportunity as a 4 credit internship.

Requirements: Friendly, analytical thinking students who would find it rewarding
to help senior citizens find the insurance plan that best meets their needs
and to screen them for programs for which they may be eligible.
Students from any major are welcome.

Location: 200 Plaza Drive, Suite B Vestal (across from University Plaza)
