Employer Site Visits Expand to Silicon Valley in May 2019

Silicon Valley

Each year, the Fleishman Center, partner career offices and the Alumni Association work together to coordinate opportunities for students to visit employer sites in various cities including New York, Boston, and Washington D.C. This year, the offices have added their first cross-country destination: California's Silicon Valley.

The first-ever Silicon Valley trip will take place at the beginning of summer break, May 20 - 24, 2019. The trip will include lodging and a $500 airfare credit for selected students, paid for by the Alumni Association.

Applications for the visits, which include Facebook, Google and others, open in April, but students must attend a mandatory information session. Limited spots are available for this program, and students will be selected based on application quality. Learn more about the Silicon Valley Site Visits.

Employer Site VisitAt these visits, students can experience different industries in-person, engage with professionals, gain insight into various work environments, and establish a valuable understanding of career options to consider, all while expanding their professional network. The vast majority of the visits are hosted by alumni in their places of work.

Offered during school breaks, Employer Site Visits bring students to metropolitan areas with a strong Binghamton alumni presence. The program began with visits hosted in New York City during winter break, connecting students of all majors to diverse industries and organizations, including Google, Morgan Stanley, Pinterest, Yelp and NYU Langone, to name a few.

The Employer Site Visit program has been expanded to include more cities and, by extension, more students.

During spring break in March 2019, select students will spend four days networking in either Boston or Washington, D.C., visiting organizations such as Wells Fargo, HubSpot, Sirius XM, Center for Health Information and Analysis, and The U.S. Department of State. Both visits will culminate in a student-alumni networking reception.

Employer Site Visits allow students to learn first-hand about an organization's culture, gain insight into working and living in each city and expand their professional networks, giving them an edge when applying to future jobs and internships. A typical site visit lasts two hours and consists of an employer presentation, a panel of employees and site tour.

According to anonymous survey feedback on previous site visits:

Employer Site Visit"The NYC Employer Visits are a great way to get a glimpse of companies and industries, especially their cultures," said a winter break attendee. "Touring Google was incredibly helpful in confirming my belief that I could get an amazing job with a Binghamton degree."

"Having more direct contact with professionals not only provides networking opportunities but also gave me valuable insight into different careers I might want to pursue," said another student.
