Inclusive Pedagogy Workshop Series Fall 2021

The Division of Academic Affairs and the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are sponsoring a series of three required workshops for new faculty on inclusive pedagogy. All instructors are welcome to attend any or all of the sessions. The workshop series on Inclusive Pedagogy includes three sessions presented by the UDiversity Educational Institute that involve engaging content that includes best practices in the field, activities, scenarios and discussions that connect university instructors and work to create understandings and expectations for student success in the classroom.

Part 1 - Creating a Shared Language: The Syllabus

Description:  Part 1 of this series tackles shared language that we use around cultural competence work that allows faculty to provide clearer communication with students as it relates to creating, changing and enhancing our syllabi to reflect a more welcoming and inclusive classroom environment.  Participants will evaluate and assess an actual course syllabus and examine best practices in creating new agreements with students as it relates to learning.

Part 2 - The Need for Dialogue

Description:  How do we create community in the classroom?  In this portion of the series participants will explore the different types of classroom engagement styles from discussion to dialogue to debating that are regular occurrences in today’s classrooms. Participants will also explore intergenerational dynamics  as it relates to teaching. This session assists instructors on how to effectively engage in difficult conversations and explore all sides of an issue.   

Part 3 - Ensuring Academic Success

Description: Ensuring academic success means that we are able to effectively reach AND teach all students.  This session explores how faculty become culturally competent educators by having the ability to motivate students to learn more.  The activities focus on our privileged agreements in higher education and how we can encourage more students to move from a fixed mindset about course content to a growth mindset.
