Promoting Student Success and Engagement

In what ways do you promote student success and engagement in your teaching? The Center for Learning and Teaching invites you to an interactive session where you will learn methods to enhance student success and approaches to track success and engagement of your learners.

ResearchConnection Demonstration

ResearchConnection is an online collaboration and networking platform for students and faculty. Through its searchable database, it allows faculty to recruit RA's and students to discover opportunities and learn about ongoing research at their school. The platform offers many tools with the goal of making research more discoverable and efficient.

Streaming Video with Panopto

Panopto is a streaming media solution that Binghamton University will be piloting in 2015-2016. With Panopto, one can create video as well as upload video to your Blackboard course for streaming. Representatives from Panopto will help to facilitate the session and cover the basics of getting started with using the software. This event is open to those who are already in the pilot as well as those who may be interested in joining.

Dr. Billie Franchini: Intro to Team-Based Learning

September 25

The Center for Learning and Teaching is pleased to announce that Billie Franchini, Interim Director of the Institute for Teaching, Learning and Academic Leadership (ITLAL) at the University at Albany, will present two workshops on Team-Based Learning (TBL). This approach involves assigning students to long-term, diverse groups that promote both learning and team development. Ms. Franchini frequently presents on TBL and has published on this topic. Attendees are strongly encouraged to register for both workshops.

Join the Center for Learning and Teaching for a panel presentation consisting of current Binghamton University students representing a cross-section of the student body. They will discuss a role of technology in higher education, from their perspective. Come join us to hear students share their expectations for the use of technology in and out of the classroom and the direction they would like to see educational technology take in the future.

Steve Lisman, distinguished teaching professor of psychology here at Binghamton University, will discuss his cooperative approach to classroom observation. He will also have a panel of faculty and GAs whom he has worked with.

What's in Your Syllabus?

How can you create an effective syllabus that students will refer to throughout the semester? A learning-centered syllabus communicates course goals and objectives, expectations, and evaluation criteria. The Center for Learning and Teaching invites you to an interactive session where participants will explore sample syllabi and discuss the questions that shape an effective course, including how to develop course objectives, organize course content, design appropriate learning activities, and successful assessment and evaluation.

Top Hat Demonstration

November 13

As part of the CLT's student response system pilot, TopHat will be demonstrating their product for potential adoption by faculty in Spring and Fall 2016. Top Hat is a classroom and student response system used to increase student engagement during your lectures using their cell phones. No Clickers Required. Their lecture platform empowers professors to deliver more engaging lectures and helps schools learn from their student data.

Promoting Student Engagement: George Kuh

November 20

The event will provide participants with a more intimate setting to discuss Student Success and Engagement concepts and strategies that can be used in learning and teaching. George D. Kuh is adjunct research professor at the University of Illinois and Chancellor's Professor of Higher Education Emeritus at Indiana University (IU). He directs the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment and was the founding director of IU's Center for Postsecondary Research and the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) as well as related instruments for law students, beginning college students, and faculty.

Teaching GIFTS: Sharing Successful Ideas
