4+1 Accelerated Program: BA in Math and MS in ECE

The accelerated program allows highly qualified students to complete two degrees in five years:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) in math
  • Master of Science (MS) in electrical and computer engineering (ECE).

Benefits

  • Time savings: Five years for both degrees
  • Cost savings: Up to three graduate courses at undergraduate rates, which can be double-counted for both BA and MS
  • In demand: Greater potential for higher starting salary and one of most valuable college degrees
  • Simplified admission process: Requirements on GRE and TOEFL exams as well as letters of recommendation are waived

Criteria

  • Be an undergraduate student in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Binghamton University.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or above before the department application.
  • Have a minimum of 88 credits and a 3.0 GPA over both ECE courses and all courses before the graduate school application.

(GRE, letters of recommendation and $100 deposit are waived)

  • A minimum of 88 credits and a 3.0 GPA over both ECE courses and all the courses is required for admission.
  • Complete 4+1 degree application online. The Graduate School will notify you via email to pay the $75 application fee. When the fee is paid, the Graduate School will email you an acceptance letter if you meet the requirements
  • Follow instructions in the acceptance letter to “confirm intent to continue.”

Important Dates for Applications

  • The last day of Spring Year 1 (the second semester in freshman year): the date that students may initiate the department application
  • The last day of Summer Year 1 (the third semester in freshman year): the date before which students typically submit the department application so that the admitted students may take EECE 251 and 260 courses in the fall and spring of their sophomore year.
  • The last day of Spring Year 2 (the second semester in sophomore year): the date before which students can submit the department application. The admitted students may have to take EECE 251 and 260 courses in the summer of their sophomore year.
  • The last day of Spring Year 3 (the second semester in junior year): the deadline for students to submit the department application. The admitted students may have to take EECE 251 and 260 courses in the summer of their junior year.
  • The last day of Fall Year 4 (the first semester in senior year.): the date that students may initiate their application for graduate school admission.
  • The last day of Spring Year 4 (the second semester in senior year.): the deadline for students to submit their application for graduate school admission.

Note #1: The undergraduate requirements are built on the BA in math (434) with the following bridge courses to be completed.

  1. MATH 371, MATH 404, MATH 447 and MATH 448.
  2. EECE 260 - Electrical Circuits, EECE 251- Digital Logic Design, EECE 301 - Signals and Systems, EECE 315 - Electronics I, EECE 3XX - one additional EECE core depth course.
  3. Two EECE 5XX graduate-level courses.

Courses in (1) may overlap with the courses in the regular BA in Math major. 

Courses in (2) are extra to the major requirement for BA in math. All the courses in (1), (2) and (3) are intended to be counted toward the total 126 undergraduate credits.

Courses in (3) are the courses to be double-counted to the BA and the MS degrees.

Note #2: EECE 251 and EECE 260 must be taken before any other EECE courses. The two courses are offered in the fall and spring each year. The two courses are also usually offered during the summer session.  Thus, there are two options for students to take the two courses:

  • Apply before the last day of Summer Year 1 (i.e., the third semester in freshman year), and take the two courses in the following Fall, Spring semesters, respectively (recommended).
  • Apply before the last day of Spring Year 2 or 3, and take the two courses in the summer right after the admission.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will the BA degree be awarded?

The BA will be awarded after the requirements for the BA are completed. Normally, it should be at the end of spring year 4 (the second semester of your senior year).  The BA and MS degrees are awarded sequentially. 

Can I withdraw from the accelerated program?  

Yes, you can.
