Karima S. Legette

A graduate of BU, Karima earned a BA in geography and MA in Urban and Retail Planning. As a Clifford D. Clark Fellow, her extensive research in race, ethnicity and place has resulted in her current focus on equity, access and leadership development for underrepresented students.

Serving the campus for over a decade, Karima is a Spring 2014 graduate of the Leadership Development Program (LDP), and a recipient of the 2014 Alumni Medal of Distinguished Service. She also serves on the McNair Scholars Advisory Board.

Karima began her career as the associate director of the McNair Scholars Program at Binghamton, where she advised first-generation and underrepresented college students seeking research opportunities and guided them to masters and Ph.D. programs across the country. She is a past board member of the Binghamton YWCA, and a past trustee for the Broome County Public Library. As an undergraduate, Karima volunteered at the Broome County Urban League and established a Pre-College Initiative Program (PCI) at Binghamton High School.

   
   

 

Joanna Cardona-Lozada

Joanna assists the director in the logistics and planning of a variety of programs and events. Joanna is an alumna of Binghamton University and EOP. She is a member of Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society, who established the Anders Uwadinobi Scholarship, and she is on the Del Valle Latina/o Memorial Award Selection Committee. Joanna is also the liaison to the Decker School of Nursing, and she helped to establish and is the Staff Advisor to P.U.L.S.E (Powerful United Ladies Striving to Elevate). Joanna has a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Sociology and Latin American and Caribbean Studies and a Masters of Arts Degree in Social Science, Human Development.

 

Jeffrey Owusu

Jeff is a proud alum of the EOP program at SUNY New Paltz. In 2017, Jeff earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a minor in Black Studies. He is a member of the Beta Omicron Chapter of Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE) National Honor Society. Jeff is currently working towards obtaining a Master of Science degree in Student Affairs Administration here at Binghamton University. Throughout his collegiate career, he has gained knowledgeable experience in a variety of student affairs functional areas including: undergraduate and graduate admissions, residence life, athletics & wellness, and new student orientation. His passion is to assist college students in reaching their full potential while maximizing their social and educational growth as they navigate through their collegiate experience.

 

Josué Quiñones

Josué (also known as JQ) is a New York native and an alumnus of EOP and Binghamton University (BU) . In 2010, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Master of Social Work in 2012. Formerly, a Resident Director here at BU, Josue also has experience as an Educator and Life Coach committed to moving, inspiring, and empowering students to pursue their passions and to be successful. He has been recognized as a Career Champion by the Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development and as an Inspirational Young Latino by the student organization, LASU . Josue assists the director as the Staff Advisor to Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE) National Honor Society , and he serves as the liaison to the Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development, partnering to develop programs for the enhancement of EOP students' career readiness and success.

JQ enjoys collecting sneakers, doing impersonations, beat-boxing, and rapping. In 2008, he was part of the opening act for Grammy nominated artist, Pitbull.

 

Akeem Samuels

Akeem assists the director with the coordination of the residential component of the Binghamton Enrichment Program (BEP), EOP's summer orientation program for incoming first year students. In addition, Akeem is the liaison to Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE), EOP's National Honor Society, and the Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development.

Akeem earned his Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology and Disaster Studies at SUNY New Paltz. As an alumnus of SUNY New Paltz, Akeem was involved in many leadership positions. To name a few, Akeem was a Resident Assistant, EOP Peer Mentor, Orientation Leader, and EOP Summer Liaison. These leadership positions have provided him the opportunity to develop his skills and empower incoming and current students at the College. Akeem then went on to acquire his Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from Binghamton University. That said, he is a proud alumnus of the EOP program, SUNY New Paltz, and Binghamton University.

Akeem has been honored as a Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and is a member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology.

 

Han Tian

Han completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Sociology at the University at Buffalo. Although he was never a recipient of the benefits of EOP, Han was a Residential Counselor for two consecutive summer bridge programs as well as an Academic Coach. These positions provided him the opportunity to develop his leadership, collaboration, and advocacy skills. In 2016 he completed his Master of Education in School Counseling. This gave him the opportunity to work in various High Schools in Queens to better understand student needs and provide them the skills to succeed in their future endeavors. Han has also worked for the SEEK Program at Hunter College as an Academic Counselor to support students’ academic, socio-emotional, and career development.

In his free time, Han plays football, handball, various video games, and enjoys traveling. He has been to the Philippines, China, and Iceland to name a few. One of goals is to learn about different cultures through his travels and the people that he meets.

 

Yulanda Whyte-Johnson

Yulanda is the Liaison to the Admissions Office, the Financial Aid & Student Services Office, the Alumni & Parent Office, OIR and the Harpur College Advising Office. She assists the director with the coordination of the EOP Recognition Ceremony, Homecoming events, reports and other fiscal responsibilities. Yulanda is an alumna of EOP at SUNY Oneonta, where she received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees in English and Marriage & Family Therapy respectively. Yulanda is a member of The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

 

Vanessa N. Young

Vanessa assists the director with the planning and operations of the EOP office. She is the liaison to the School of Management, where she advises students interested in management and accounting majors. Vanessa is also the liaison to the Graduate Admissions office and Harpur Advising Pre-Law program. Here she assists students in their decisions to go on to graduate school at Binghamton or to apply to a law school. Vanessa is an alumna of both Binghamton University and EOP. She serves on the Michael V. Boyd Scholarship Committee, the Jerry E. Cunningham Award Committee, the Binghamton University Foundation Awards and Who's Who Selection Committees. She is a member of Student Affairs Administrator in Higher Education/ National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and College Student Educators International (ACPA). Vanessa established the Binghamton University Gamma Delta Chapter, Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society. She has also served as the Staff Advisor to the Binghamton University Gospel Choir (BUGC).

Vanessa has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and African American Studies and a Master of Science Degree in College Student Personnel Administration from Indiana University in Bloomington.

 

Ryan Mead

Ryan is the coordinator for EOP's academic support services. During the academic year, Ryan's responsibilities include the hiring, training, supervising, and professionalization of peer tutorial staff, the development of academic workshops geared towards the academic success of EOP students, and the collection, management, and assessment of data geared towards the utilization and success of EOP's academic services. He also plays a role in EOP's summer BEP program, where he works with instructional staff in the development and utilization of academic courses and other services provided to students. Ryan is an alumnus of SUNY New Paltz, where he received a Bachelor's of Arts in English and Binghamton University, where he received a Master's degree and Ph.D. in Sociology. In all, Ryan's focus lies in the development of academic programs and environments geared toward assisting EOP students cultivate the tools, skills, strategies, and habits needed to succeed at Binghamton University and beyond.

 

 

Jill Murphy

Administrative Assistant to the EOP Director

Jill is the assistant to the director and assists him with many office functions. Jill assists the director, assistant director, and the counselors with administrative aspects of the Binghamton Enrichment Program and fiscal planning for EOP.
