Molecular Anthropology Research Stream
Human populations around the world are subject to diseases, such as malaria, Lyme disease and obesity. To understand people’s susceptibility to disease and, thus, how best to deal with disease in an ever-changing world, this research stream uses sophisticated molecular and biomedical techniques. The research carried out by freshman students in the Molecular & Biomedical Anthropology research stream at Binghamton University utilizes an extensive archive of samples covering decades, which allows examination on a micro-evolutionary scale.
A key component of the FRI program is that students learn to work in teams -- because that is how researchers tackle the complexity of understanding disease patterns in populations, such as resistance to drugs used to counter malaria. The students create a research proposal, based on the protocols and equipment they have learned to use. Subsequently, they conduct the research they have proposed. This process develops interpersonal and communication skills and critical thinking, along with an array of advanced technical skills.
