Frequently Asked Questions
What hours are you open to the public?
We are open Monday through Friday only, from 8:30am to 4:00pm. We may be closed earlier, depending on staffing.. If you are planning a visit from off campus, please call first to be sure we are open and not dedicated to a large on-campus class. Our number at the greenhouse is: 607-777-2502.
Can our group have a guided tour?
Our primary mission is to serve the Department of Biological Sciences. If we can work out a compatible time and date for a group tour we will do so. It is preferable that all school groups requesting a tour have some knowledge of plant growth prior to visiting the Teaching Greenhouse. Our self guided tour script can assist teachers and group leaders prepare visitors for the tour. All tours are during our normal hours (above) and the best size is 10 or under.
Do you ever sell any of your plants?
No. The Teaching Greenhouse is a permanent collection of plants to support the teaching of the Department of Biological Sciences. Many plants were specifically acquired to meet those needs in diversity. Our staff focus is on the Teaching Mission of the Greenhouse.
Do you take donated plants?
We gladly accept plants or seed that add to our diverse teaching collection. Many of our plants have come to us this way, but we do need to limit the plants we accept. If you have a common houseplant, a plant that has outgrown its living space, or a plant with insects, we will not be able to accept it. Donations are permanent and any future decisions regarding donated plants will be at the discretion of the greenhouse manager.
Can you answer my own plant health question or can I bring them in to you for help?
We can certainly try to answer your question regarding house plant health, but we are not able to accept your personal plants or plant parts for inquiry. These should be directed to the Cornell Cooperative Extension on Upper Front Street in Binghamton. Questions regarding outdoor plants should also be addressed to the Extension or to one of our area's fine Nursery/Garden Centers.
Can we make a monetary donation to the Greenhouse?
Yes, certainly. A voluntary donation can be sent to HEIER (EW) Teaching & Research Greenhouse, Foundation Office, Binghamton University, PO Box 6000, Binghamton, New York, 13902-6000.
