What the collaborative is?

The Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (AOD) Student Collaborative is a diverse group of students committed to finding ways to help their peers stay safe throughout college. The group is facilitated by the ATOD office graduate student assistants and the Campus Prevention Coordinator. Some members of the group choose to drink or use substances and others do not (no expectations here). Collectively, though, the group is focussed on fostering a culture and environment that prevents student harm from substance misuse and facilitates students making informed health decisions.

This group is not about telling others what they should or shouldn't do. It's about shaping outreach, education, policies, and resources.

The more diverse the perspectives, the stronger the collaborative will be!

Why join?

Student members recieve the following benefits:

  • Good food.
  • Binghamton swag.
  • A voice in what goes on, on your campus.
  • An expansion of your resume.
  • Networking opportunities.
  • Leadership development.
  • The opportunity to learn about yourself.
  • The opportunity to help your peers.

How often and where does the Collaborative meet?

The group meets approximately 6-9 times an academic year for an hour and a half (during the months of Sept., Oct., Nov., Feb., Mar., Apr.).  Meeting times will be set at the beginning of the academic year based on the groups input.

Meetings are typically held in the Health Promotion and Prevention Services conference room (Old O'Connor 352), but we head outdoors when the weather is nice and welcome suggestions for exploring other parts of campus. Food is always provided!

What you really want to know:

  • Members should always come with an open-mind and a positive attitude.
  • What is said in our meetings stays in our meetings.
  • No judgement here. Everyone has different experiences with alcohol and other drugs. Group ground rules are set from the get-go because having open dialogue is key.
  • Your perception of the campus culture and what students lived experiences are around substance use matters.
LET'S HAVE SOME FUN!
