Home away from home

HDEV students actually have two homes at Binghamton University:

  • Freshmen and first-semester sophomores take their classes on Binghamton's Vestal campus
  • Second-semester sophomores, juniors and seniors take the majority of their classes at the Binghamton University Downtown Center

Being in the heart of downtown Binghamton — ranked 18th best college town in America for student life, culture, economic health and opportunity in 2015 by the American Institute for Economic Research — means students are near the organizations where they are interning, making real-world learning easily accessible. Many Binghamton students choose to live downtown as upperclassmen, facilitating this transition. Students who continue to live on campus can take advantage of free bus transportation available every 20 minutes.

Safety and security

Student safety is a priority at the UDC. The area surrounding the center is generally safe. It is usually teeming with student life, since students make up a majority of the downtown population. A security guard is on duty at the Binghamton University Downtown Center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and the Binghamton Police Department is a block away. A highly visible emergency phone is located in the center's parking lot. This phone will automatically connect the user with the New York State University Police at Binghamton.
