Applying for health insurance during OPT

Two separate e-forms are needed to apply for health insurance during an approved OPT period. First, the OPT Health Insurance Application e-form needs to be submitted by the student. If the application is approved by ISSS, the student must also submit the Verification of International Health Insurance Fee Payment e-form once the fee has been paid.

Once you have logged in to iSSS BU Client Services, the e-forms are found under "Insurance and Finances" in the "iSSS BU Home Page" block.

Any previously-submitted applications are listed (oldest first). There is also an index of the symbols used to describe the status of the e-forms. To begin a new application, click the "Start a New Request" prompt.

You will see the two different e-forms that must be submitted to complete the application. The selection box for the verification e-form is grayed out - you cannot submit this e-form until the initial e-form has been approved by the International Health Insurance Team. To start an application, click on the "OPT Health Insurance Application" prompt.

When filling out the e-form, required fields are indicated with an asterisk (*).

The top section of the e-form describes the rules for submitting the application.

The US ADDRESS section shows the address currently on-file with ISSS. If this address is incorrect, please submit the 'OPT Address Update' e-form.

The start and end dates of your insurance coverage and number of months are entered in the COVERAGE REQUEST section.  Please note:

  • Start Date is ALWAYS the 15th of the month.
  • End Date is ALWAYS the 14th of the month.

Date information is available via drop-down lists by clicking the arrows to the right of the input fields.

Check the verification box to certify the e-form information is correct, then click the "Submit" button.rcl-three

The initial OPT Health Insurance page is displayed. The "OPT Health Insurance Application" status is now 'Pending Review'.

You will receive an email after the International Health Insurance Team processes your application. If it is approved, the subject of the email will be "E-Form Approved: OPT Health Insurance Application". Please allow 3-5 business days for processing.

The status of the application will be updated to "Complete", and you will be able to select the "Verify OPT Health Insurance Payment" e-form. Be sure you have made the payment before submitting the e-form.

Check the box to signify you have paid the International Health Insurance Fee, then click on the 'Submit' button. Please Note - do NOT submit this e-form until AFTER you have paid the fee.

The initial OPT Health Insurance page is displayed. The "Verify OPT Health Insurance Payment" status is now 'Pending Review'.

You will receive an email once the International Health Insurance team has completed the enrollment process. Please allow 3-5 business days to for the transaction to be completed.

After the e-form is approved, both e-forms will show 'Complete' on the OPT Health Insurance page.

To submit an application for a new time period, select OPT Health Insurance. The page will be displayed with your previous request listed. Click the "Start a New Request" prompt to begin the process for a new application.

If the verification e-form is submitted and you have not paid the insurance fee, the request will be denied. This will be reflected on the OPT Health Insurance page - the status box next to the e-form will be red with an 'X' in it.
