Restarting University Libraries Working Plan

The Binghamton University Libraries are dedicated to providing library resources and services to Binghamton faculty, students and staff for the fall 2020 semester. In accordance with the Restarting Binghamton plan and its guiding principles, the Libraries plan to be open at the start of the fall 2020 semester. The following plan provides an overview of our services and resources that we expect to be available this fall. 

As with the Restarting Binghamton plan, the Libraries’ plan will adjust as necessary based on scientific data, and in accordance with guidance from public health and government authorities. Check back frequently for news and updates. 

Visiting the Libraries

Library visitors are expected to adhere to all Restarting Binghamton policies and guidelines. Protecting the health and safety of everyone is our guiding principle. The library space has been reimagined to provide a safe, high-quality experience for learning.

While in the Libraries, you must:

  • Wear a face covering or mask that covers both nose and mouth at all times (from CDC: How to Safely Wear and Take Off a Face Covering);
  • Follow social distancing practices by staying at least six feet apart from other people at all times;
  • Obey all signage, including floor decals for distancing and elevator capacity; and
  • Practice personal hygiene (i.e., washing hands frequently).

Faculty, students and staff are reminded to use the personal bottle of sanitizer provided by the University to sanitize their hands as well as surfaces within the library such as tables and chairs. Hand sanitizer machines are also available at the entrances of the library.

Plexi-glass barriers have been installed at all service points and directional signage will assist with traffic flow to minimize person-to-person contact.

Library staff will wear a face covering or mask at service desks and public spaces.

No food is allowed in the library; only drinks in covered containers are allowed until further notice. This helps ensure that visitors adhere to wearing a face covering or mask.

Per the Restarting Binghamton Plan, we will discourage non-essential visitors from accessing campus to enter buildings and meet with or interact with students, faculty and staff. Hours

The preliminary hours for Bartle and University Downtown Center Library (UDC) libraries will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday for the Science Library. All locations will be open on Labor Day and Yom Kippur. Due to staffing, we will not be able to offer evening and weekend hours at any location.

Study Spaces

Different types of study spaces are available throughout the Libraries. To facilitate social distancing, the Libraries reduced the overall number of seats available to maintain six feet distance between people. Do not move the furniture for the safety of you and those around you.

Due to social distancing guidelines, group study rooms will be limited to 2-4 students depending on the size of the room. To reserve a room, visit Reservations.

Information Commons

The Bartle Library, Science Library and UDC Library Information Commons will be open during library hours. To facilitate social distancing, the number of computers will be reduced and printing areas will be reconfigured. Students will need to plan ahead for their printing needs as last minute printing may not be feasible. We encourage the use of electronic/digital versions of files whenever possible.

Collections

The Libraries have an extensive online and print collection to support teaching, learning and research. Our Find It! Discovery Service is a single-search box that provides a dynamic "one-stop" discovery and delivery service to the Libraries’ online and print collections.

To support online courses, our diverse online collections include a vast array of e-books, databases, online journals, audiovisual and other resources which are available on and off campus. Visit our subject guides to learn about resources by topic. We will continue to build upon our extensive ebook collection – see our Finding and using ebooks guide. 

Our unique print collection will be accessible for browsing and check-out when the library is open to the campus. We encourage you to use our meeScan self-checkout machines located near the Reader Services desks or use our convenient meeScan online mobile app to check out items. Binghamton University faculty, students and staff may also request materials to be paged and placed on self-serve hold shelves. Material can be requested via Find It! or Interlibrary Loan material from your ILLiad account. Visit Find It! FAQ to learn how to request materials.

Note: During the summer, we are offering our Bartle To Go pick-up service for print materials.

The Libraries will not be accepting any gifts of books except on a limited, case-by-case basis.

Special Collections and University Archives

Special Collections and University Archives collects, organizes, interprets, preserves and provides access to unique and rare materials that enhance and encourage research and learning. 

Special Collections will be open by appointment between the hours of 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday to Binghamton University students, faculty and staff. Appointments must be made at least one full business day prior to a visit requesting the specific item(s) needed. We will continue to assist all researchers virtually as much as possible. Reader Services

Course Reserves

Course reserves are course materials that instructors have asked the Libraries to make easily accessible to students. Electronic course reserves will be available by logging directly onto Library Course Reserves or your course in myCourses. Physical reserves will be available at Bartle and UDC libraries at the Reader Services desk. Books will be sanitized between uses.

Instructors should submit requests online via the Library Course Reserves tool at reserves.binghamton.edu. You can also access this tool via myCourses.

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Service

Interlibrary Loan services expand the range of research materials available for instruction and scholarship. Materials which are not owned by the Libraries may be obtained from other libraries through Interlibrary loan. You can request print and electronic materials via our Interlibrary Loan service using your ILLiad account.

For those teaching or learning online, our Document Delivery service provides an electronic copy of book chapters or articles from our print journal collection via your ILLiad account.

Chat with Us

Reader Services staff will be available to assist you via our new online Chat with Us box. Staff can answer your questions about library services and resources. It will be available in Find It! during business hours.

Technology Lending Program

Initially, the Libraries will not be providing our technology lending program. This service will  be reinstated when it is possible to lend technology safely.

Research and Instructional Services

Librarians provide research assistance virtually via chat, text or email - visit Ask A Librarian.

Library Research Instruction

The Libraries' instruction program supports the teaching mission by educating students for academic success and lifelong learning. Librarians work with instructors to provide  information literacy and library research instruction. Due to social distancing requirements, library instruction will be provided primarily online via Zoom or by asynchronous instruction utilizing online course guides and materials which can be provided in myCourse. In-person instruction can be requested for small classes (up to nine students). Visit Virtual Library Research Instruction to request library research instruction. 

Research Consultation

Subject librarians are available for personal research consultations regarding specialized resources, specific assignments or other research needs. Consultations will be conducted virtually via Zoom.

Online Subject and Research Guides

Our online How To Do Library Research guide provides research advice that will help you successfully navigate the Libraries' print and electronic collections. We also offer online Subject Guides for resources by discipline.

Library Research Tutorials

The Libraries offers a series of online screencasts that demonstrate how to use various library services, databases and research tools. There is also an interactive tutorial suite with topics covering evaluating resources, academic honesty, citing sources, finding books and articles, keeping current, using social media wisely, and using different publication types. Digital Scholarship

Our Digital Scholarship Services create a community of practice for research and creative activities, opening new possibilities by extending traditional methods of research and pedagogy through application of new technologies and digital media to advance the teaching and learning processes. Services also include our Open Repository @ Binghamton and Open Educational ResourcesVirtual consultations and online workshops will be available in the fall. The Libraries' new Digital Scholarship Center located in Science Library 209 will be available for booking.    

Scholarly Communications

The Libraries’ Scholarly Communications Program facilitates discussion of emerging publication and scholarship models to support campus faculty, staff and student publishing and archiving of scholarly works. Services include copyright information, research data management, and Open Access publishing. Virtual consultations will be available.
