Instruction & Class Visits
Binghamton University Libraries' Special Collections and Archives welcomes and encourages instructors and their students and classes to use our rich collections. We can provide instruction and orientation in a range of disciplines and subjects, including general information about how to locate and use special collection materials for research purposes and class presentations on selected materials pertaining to specific collections, subjects, historic periods, or genres.
We ask that instructors contact Special Collections to arrange a class visit as early as possible. To schedule an introductory class to Special Collections or arrange use of Special Collections materials for your course, please send an email with the following information:
- The class number and title
- The date, time, and frequency of your class (one time or multiple visits)
- The approximate number of students in each class
- How long your class session will be
- Is there an assignment, paper, or project your students will have to complete using Special Collections materials? Is group study a requirement?
After you have submitted your information, a Special Collections staff member will contact you to discuss your needs, provide you with general introductory information and an overview of basic researcher rules.
Classes will be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Because we have limited space, we can only accommodate classes of no larger than 20 students. Larger classes will be divided and separate sessions scheduled. Instructor attendance during the session(s) is preferred.
To better prepare your students, please alert them that the following items are not permitted in Special Collections:
• Pens or markers (pencils only)
• Food or drink of any kind
Also, students will be asked to leave backpacks and bags in the reception area of Special Collections. Please orientate your students to our Guidelines for Use of Special Collections before their arrival.
