Binghamton University Theatre Department to present annual ‘Jazz Nutcracker’ show

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Binghamton University Theatre Department will premiere its annual Jazz Nutcracker show at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in the Watters Theater, in the Fine Arts Building, on campus. Additional performances will be held at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2.

Jazz Nutcracker offers a fresh spin on what is traditionally performed as a ballet, featuring a variety of jazz dance styles — classical, contemporary, swing, tap, lyrical modern contemporary and hints of Fosse. Through a series of kinetic dance performances, the show tells the story of a young girl named Clara who receives a nutcracker as a gift from her godfather, Drosselmeyer. The nutcracker comes to life and whisks Clara away to a fantasy dreamland, where she is treated to gifts and dances from representatives from across the globe.

The holiday dance production features choreography by JoEllen Kuhlan from the Binghamton University Theatre Department, and dancers from Binghamton University and the local community. New this year, Jazz Nutcracker will include live magic by David Black.

Tickets are $18, general; $16, alumni/faculty/senior/staff; and $10, student, and can be purchased at the Anderson Center Box Office, online or by phone at 607-777-ARTS.
