MEDIA AND PUBLIC RELATIONS ACTIVITIES

We produced, directed and filmed a series of four new commercials to air online nationally and in other high-profile platforms. The series, titled, “That’s Where Binghamton Comes In,” highlights how the University is educating tomorrow’s researchers, health professionals, entrepreneurs and other outstanding academics.

The work of our faculty continues to draw the attention of news outlets across the globe. Carl Lipo, Leigh Ann Wheeler, Robin Best, Chou-Yu Tsai, Meredith Coles, Seokheun Choi, Steven Tammariello and many others were featured in a wide variety of national news outlets, ranging from the Smithsonian to Elle, reaching an audience of millions.

We also had a little fun by organizing the University’s first-ever Holiday Sweater Contest to benefit the Bear Necessities Food Pantry. Dozens of students, faculty and staff participated in the contest.

BINGHAMTON IN THE NEWS

Carl Lipo, professor of anthropology, and his research team were featured in Newsweek, MSN.com, The New York Post, Fox News, The Daily Mail, Science Daily, LiveScience and various other publications for their research that revealed that the famous Easter Island statues, called moai, were built along the coast of the remote island to mark the location of freshwater sources used for survival. Total circulation: over 59.8 million.

Robin E. Best, associate professor of political science, was featured in Elle, Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Travel and various other publications for her insight on how to address gerrymandering and voter suppression in elections, and how to ameliorate such issues in the upcoming 2020 election. Total circulation: over 23.6 million.

Chou-Yu Tsai, assistant professor of management; Shelley Dionne, professor and associate dean of the School of Management; and Francis Yammarino, distinguished professor, were featured in The New York Post and other publications for their research that found that bosses get better results when they combine compassion with clear goals. Total circulation: over 21 million.

Meredith Coles, professor of psychology, was featured in NBC News BETTER, Inquisitr News and various other publications for her response to New York being the first state to mandate mental health as part of health education curriculum for elementary, middle and high school students. Total circulation: over 17.5 million.

Seokheun Choi, associate professor and director of the Bioelectronics and Microsystems Lab, was featured in The Conversation, U.S. News & World Report and several other publications for his research on cutting-edge, paper-based electronics that can fold, biodegrade and be the basis for the next generation of devices. Total circulation: over 14.6 million.

Jonathan Krasno, professor of political science, was featured in the Chicago Tribune for his research on the effectiveness of campaign signs. While campaign signs don’t increase voter turnout overall, the signs provide a small boost in a candidate’s chances in areas where they place them, says Krasno. Total circulation: over 14 million.

Sang Won Yoon, associate professor of systems science and industrial engineering, and his research team were featured in India Today, Science Daily, Business Standard and other publications for their research on improving airport efficiency that involved creating two models that consider the costs incurred when passengers and flights are delayed. Total circulation: over 11.2 million.

Steven Tammariello, associate professor of biological sciences, and his research team were featured in Smithsonian.com, The Conversation, National Post, Daily Mail and other publications for their work in extracting and analyzing DNA from Seabiscuit’s hooves to figure out what made him a champion racehorse. Total circulation: over 9.9 million.

Louis Piper, associate professor of physics and director of materials science and engineering, was featured in Science Daily, Science and Technology Research News and other publications for his research on creating more energy-efficient computers using “neuristor” circuits that can compute complex calculations, enabling devices like drones to operate without depending on a constant WiFi connection. Total circulation: over 5.7 million.

Leigh Ann Wheeler, professor of history, was featured in Salon, Connecticut Post, The Conversation, The Good Men Project Magazine and other publications for insight on how Anne Moody’s Coming of Age in Mississippi still speaks to the nation’s racial discord. The memoir speaks to yesterday’s and today’s pressing issues of poverty, race and civil rights, says Wheeler. Total circulation: over 5.6 million.

Yvonne Johnston, research associate professor at the Decker School of Nursing, was featured in Nursing Times, The Medical News and other publications for her research on how fall-prevention programs, specifically The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Stopping Elderly Accidents Deaths and Injuries (STEADI) initiative, result in less fall-related hospitalizations in the elderly. Total circulation: over 1.35 million.

SOCIAL MEDIA

We developed various global, multi-faceted campaigns via social for admissions and the new School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, reaching 180,000+ targeted users and garnering 700,000+ impressions.

We amplified our communications regarding student safety by producing eight new articles. With these pieces we worked to ensure a consistent focus on student safety. The articles ranged from drinking responsibly to keeping off-campus housing safe while at school and during break.

We published nine blogs, on topics ranging from local businesses owned by alumni to first-generation college students at Binghamton.

We used the Stories feature across Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to highlight events like Homecoming and the Graduate Programs Fair, blogs, rankings and more.

Our LinkedIn account continues to grow, with 97,444 total followers and 18 new updates, including a combination of important news, evergreen photos, blogs, rankings and alumni news.

Hundreds of photos and several new videos were created for the Binghamton University website, social media, various magazines and print publications, covering a wide spectrum of events on campus, including the 2018 State of the University Address, Homecoming, a Holiday Sweater Contest and more!

Researchers from Binghamton University’s Mechanical Engineering Department have developed a manufacturing technique that will keep electronics cooler by 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit), allowing for faster, more efficient computation. This research was led by Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Scott Schiffres.

Scheduling and coordinating air traffic can be difficult, but taking the airlines’ and passengers’ delay costs into account can actually save airlines money and result in fewer delays, according to a new study from Binghamton University.
