Binghamton University Testing Center earns national recognition

Binghamton’s UTC completed an intensive certification process that included a rigorous, time-sensitive application process and a site visit by evaluators.

With millions of educational, certification and licensure tests administered in the U.S. every year, the need for secure testing environments and trained testing staff has never been greater. The Binghamton University Testing Center (UTC), which also provides testing services to local businesses, has set the bar high for other post-secondary test centers, achieving national Test Center Certification from the National College Testing Association (NCTA) as a leader in excellent testing practices.

Binghamton’s UTC completed an intensive certification process that included a rigorous, time-sensitive application process and a site visit by evaluators. Only about 30 centers are certified each year.

“This certification was a real team effort for our department, spearheaded by UTC Director Lisa Bennett and Testing Coordinator Carrie Reidy,” said Vice Provost James Pitarresi. “We are proud to have reached such an important milestone as we continue to highlight Binghamton University as a premier institution.”

Criteria for certification are based on the NCTA Professional Standards and Guidelines, which were developed to guide post-secondary test centers in the delivery of quality testing programs.

  • Standards cover everything from promoting honesty, integrity and fairness to having adequate physical facilities that include compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and appropriate staffing.
  • Guidelines address procedural steps for administering both paper-based and computer-based testing.

The certification, which remains in place for five years and can be renewed by demonstrating continued compliance to NCTA standards and guidelines, connects Binghamton University with testing centers nationally and internationally.

“Certification allows us to interact with our community and also continue to provide resources for local businesses,” said Reidy. “This certification sets the standard for professionalism and integrity for the top institutions in the nation.”

The NCTA, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of professionalism and high-quality service in the administration of testing programs, offers certification to college and university test centers that demonstrate exemplary practices. NCTA membership numbers more than 2,200 testing professionals from 650 colleges and universities as well as 50 test companies and organizations offering test-related products and services. www.ncta-testing.org
