“Life without Limitation” the focus of lecture at Binghamton University

BINGHAMTON, NY – A Binghamton University alumnus who is a former Paralympian and a Binghamton faculty expert in accessibility will speak at “Life without Limitation,” a TIER Talks event presented by M&T Bank. This program will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at the Center of Excellence Symposium Hall in Binghamton University’s Innovative Technologies Complex, 85 Murray Hill Rd., Vestal. TIER Talks is free and open to the public.

Dan Kosick ’00, MSW ’06, will speak about his journey from cancer survivor and amputee to elite athlete. At age 15, he developed a strange pain in his right ankle that turned out to be a cancerous tumor. Doctors amputated his leg and had him undergo precautionary chemotherapy. After getting his first prosthetic leg, he learned to walk and eventually run. Kosick was on the U.S. Disabled Alpine Ski Team and competed in the 1998 and 2002 Winter Paralympics. Today, he’s a high school social worker, lacrosse and swim coach, and avid obstacle course racer.

George Catalano, professor of biomedical engineering, advised a team of students that used 3D printing to produce an artificial hand for a longtime campus employee who lost a limb in an industrial accident. Catalano’s students also work with local nonprofit organizations on accessibility projects for people and animals.

TIER Talks® is supported by M&T Bank and produced by the Binghamton University Alumni Association. Since its inception in 2014, the speaker series has leveraged distinguished Binghamton alumni and faculty to address hot topics such as virtual and augmented reality, political polarization and the neuroscience of addiction.

Additional event details, speaker bios and registration information are available on the events calendar at binghamton.edu/alumni. Questions can be directed to the Binghamton University Office of Alumni Engagement at 777-2424 or alumni@binghamton.edu.
