Academic honors spring 2019

Student-athletes set another academic record

For the fourth consecutive semester, Binghamton student-athletes raised the bar on their academics and for the second straight term, the group’s grade-point average is a new record. In the fall semester, BU student-athletes achieved a 3.28 GPA - the department’s highest in at least 21 years - and a figure well above that of the general student population at the University.

The record-setting GPA also marks the 13th consecutive semester that the group surpassed the 3.10 mark.

“This is another tremendous accomplishment by our student-athletes,” Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott said. “To set an all-time high for the second-straight semester shows an incredible level of achievement at this world-class institution.”

More than 70 percent of student-athletes (299 individuals) recorded a 3.0 or higher GPA and more than half (56%) posted a 3.3 or higher. Further, more than 44 percent held down a 3.5 or higher.

The women’s tennis team won its fifth straight Academic Cup, given to the team with the highest grade-point average. Head coach Libby McGovern‘s squad had a lofty 3.65 team GPA.

Individually, 31 student-athletes representing 17 different teams had a perfect 4.0 in the spring.

Binghamton student-athletes have reached the 3.0 plateau 26 consecutive semesters dating back to 2005.
