This quarter, the UDiversity Educational Institute provided 13 trainings (one workshop for faculty/staff, 11 workshops for students and one program for the campus and community) with a total of 380 participants (328 undergraduate students, 19 graduate students, two faculty and 31 staff). DEI organized a train-the-trainer within the division for our Building Bridges to Cultural Competency Phase I workshop for graduate students. This session examined ways to build cultural awareness for faculty, staff and students.

DEI sponsored its annual Alumni of Color Professional Panel in conjunction with the Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development, Campus Activities, CCPA Career and Professional Services, the Student Association and the Black Student Union. The panel featured 10 alumni who represented all schools at Binghamton. About 50 attendees were able to meet with alumni to discuss the challenges of their fields and what students need to do now to prepare for the workforce.

UDiversity co-sponsored a program with the Multicultural Resource Center, Residential Life, Student Affairs Divisional Diversity Officer, Binghamton University NAACP and the Black Student Union as part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Welcome events. The event featured Wes Bellamy, Charlottesville, Va. city councilman, whose work has been featured in The New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today and Huffington Post, and who has made appearances on CNN, MSNBC, PBS News hour, NPR and On One with Angela Rye. He provided a dialogue on his book, Monumental: It Was Never About a Statue. He also shared his experiences and ideas on ways to improve and build campus and community cultural relationships.

UDiversity also facilitated a workshop on “Addressing Unconscious Bias in Hiring” with Residential Life. This particular session was a part of the residential assistants’ spring professional development training.
