EOP Senior Recognition Ceremony and Awards Brunch

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) kicked off the recognition ceremony season at Binghamton during the month of March. In 2016, EOP decided to re-brand its senior awards ceremony that had always been held in May during Commencement Weekend. The restructuring of Binghamton’s Commencement activities and schedule led EOP to consider something new and to move its senior recognition ceremony to earlier in the spring semester.

On Saturday, March 2, EOP welcomed 115 members of its 2019 graduating class to the EOP Senior Recognition Ceremony and Awards Brunch held in the Mandela Room. The theme for the brunch, “I am, I can, I will!” was aligned with the official establishment of the Educational Opportunity Program, welcomed by the State University of New York 51 years ago. The belief that every student capable of completing a program of higher education shall have the opportunity to do so is the spirit in which we celebrated the many accomplishments of our seniors.

Class representative Amin Taziny, graduating with a BS in mechanical engineering, has been on the Dean’s List at the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science since declaring his major. He shared his comfort at Binghamton, saying “[EOP] is what it means to be family. This is what it means to find a home away from home, and for that, I could not be more thankful. Though this may be the end of our time here, we are only beginning to discover what we are truly capable of. I can only imagine the world the people in this room are capable of building.”

EOP honored Theresa Figuerado, assistant director of undergraduate admissions and EOP enrollment coordinator with our Faculty and Staff Appreciation Award. We are grateful to all of the campus departments and offices that supported this celebration and made it possible, including the Student Affairs Divisional Diversity Initiative Grant that we were awarded this semester.
