Construction update, winter 2019

University Union basement renovations

This project is renovating the “Undergrounds” — student activity/entertainment space in the basement of the University Union. The contractor has completed demolition and mechanical improvements. Some drywall work is also finished and work to install new flooring, ceilings, light fixtures and glass storefront systems that will define various spaces is underway. Furniture is expected to arrive in mid-January, with the new space available at the end of January. Activity spaces being upgraded include bowling, billiards, ping pong, Late Nite and other areas such as the Bike Repair Shop and Meal Plan Office. There will be new restrooms and student gathering spaces as well.

Hinman Dining Hall

The Hinman Dining Hall renovation began this fall. The project site has been fenced and the contractor is focusing on utility infrastructure/relocation. The Hinman Quad is under excavation since water, storm, sewer, signal and electrical utilities need to be relocated to prepare for an addition to the building. Demolition and asbestos abatement are underway in the existing building, as is removal of old mechanical equipment. This work will continue for the next couple of months. In March, work on the foundation for the addition is expected to begin. The project involves a complete renovation of Hinman Dining Hall and construction of a 26,500 sq. ft. addition. New electrical, plumbing and mechanical equipment will be installed for the three-floor addition that will house a new lounge, restrooms, program and retail space. Work is expected to be complete in summer 2021.

Cleveland Hall renovation

Asbestos abatement continues in Cleveland Hall. The contractor is also field-verifying conditions for new windows and other materials. Rough-in work for mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems will be underway soon. This project includes reconfiguration of all baths including six ADA-accessible suite baths. Flooring will be removed and replaced. All windows and glass storefronts will be replaced with energy-efficient systems. New building insulation will be installed along with a new roof, elevators will be replaced, rooms will be painted and new lighting installed. HVAC systems will be upgraded and will include air conditioning. Electrical and plumbing infrastructure will also be updated. The scheduled completion is January 2021.

Science 2 renovations

New windows are in place on the physics wing and tower. Exterior metal panel installation is ongoing. A new roof is being installed on the physics wing and mechanical rough-in work is progressing throughout the space. Metal studs for walls are in active construction. The contractor is also doing some prep work for window replacements in the chemistry wing due to take place in the summer. The project will create new undergraduate laboratories, classrooms and restrooms.

Engineering Building renovations

The contractor has completed the installation of new windows and continues work on installing metal panels. On the first floor, offices are completed, doors installed, device installation is in progress and equipment setting has begun. A new entrance roof is complete and exterior finish work is ongoing. A new emergency generator is now in place. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing work on the second floor is ongoing. Ceiling installation and painting is underway as well. The project is providing new offices, classrooms and restrooms throughout the facility and will be complete in August 2020.

Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences

All windows have been delivered and installation is well underway. The exterior restoration is complete. The multi-trade work is taking place on floors one through four including mechanical infrastructure work and metal stud and drywall construction. Steel is in place for the addition stair tower and masonry work is underway. Enclosure of the addition is expected around March. The renovation of the first four floors will create classrooms, simulation labs, offices, advising and conference space, an information commons, and food service and public space for the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Work will be complete in late 2020. Design work for the fourth and fifth floors continues, with work in those areas scheduled for completion in spring 2021.

Science 4 west side renovation

This project is scheduled to go out to bid in January, with work likely to begin in March. The scope of the project is similar to renovations that took place on the east side of Science 4 with renovation of office space, laboratories and support space. Work is anticipated to be complete in spring 2021.
