Two women’s cross country runners named All-Academic

Sophomore Aziza Chigatayeva and senior Jessica Cueva-Scarpelli have both been named to the 2019 America East Women’s Cross Country All-Academic Team. It marks the first time that each of them have received the conference’s annual accolade.

In order to be eligible for the America East All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.3. In addition, they must have been a significant contributor to their team during the current season.

Chigatayeva was fourth at the America East Championships on Nov. 2 and earned first-team all-conference honors for the second straight season. She went on to place a team-best 35th overall at the NCAA Northeast Regional Meet this past weekend.

Cueva-Scarpelli, meanwhile, placed 12th at the America East meet and was named second-team all-conference. It marked the first time in her career that she earned all-conference honors during the cross country season.

“We are very happy for both Aziza and Jessica,” head coach Annette Acuff said. “Both of them had very good seasons and continue to do great in the classroom. We are looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish during the upcoming track season.”

Since 2005, Binghamton has posted eight women’s America East All-Academic selections. This marks the first time, however, that the Bearcats have landed a pair of women’s honorees in the same year.
