Fleishman Center introduces career clusters

The Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development launched the new career cluster model in November. By joining a career cluster, students will be connected to people, information and resources to help them explore their interests and find tailored job and internship opportunities. Career clusters are purposefully not attached to academic majors because majors do not dictate career paths. The seven career clusters, developed based on Binghamton University student outcomes data, are:

● Arts and Communication

● Business and Entrepreneurship

● Education and Human Services

● Engineering and IT

● Government, Policy and Law

● Science and Healthcare

● Exploring

In conjunction with the new career cluster focus, the Fleishman Center launched an innovative new resource, Career Tools that allows students to easily access career cluster information. Students can sign in to Career Tools and update their preferences to receive targeted career advice, job and internship postings, and the latest resources related to their career interests. Students have also begun receiving a weekly email with tailored job/internship postings, upcoming events and articles that are relevant to their cluster and unique to each student. Students can join as many clusters as they would like, including the Exploring cluster. This career cluster will assist students in discovering career options based on their interests. The Fleishman Center also offered programs throughout the fall semester that were focused on specific career clusters, including the “Career Industry Spooktacular” (Exploring cluster) held this past Halloween and “Debunking the myth: What it’s really like to be a teacher” (Education and Human Services cluster) to highlight a few.

The Fleishman Center will again offer industry specific career fairs in the spring, which will now be connected to the career clusters. On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the STEM Job and Internship Fair will be offered, targeting employers and students focused on the Engineering and IT cluster as well as the Science and Healthcare clusters. On Wednesday, Feb. 5, we will host the Spring Job and Internship Fair, which will showcase opportunities in the remaining five career clusters. The Fleishman Center will once again host the Student Employment and Summer Opportunities Fair Thursday, Feb. 6, to promote part-time jobs on campus and in the local community. All fairs will take place in the University Union’s Mandela Room.
