Center for Civic Engagement winter 2019

The Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) celebrated continued increases in student voter engagement during the 2019 local elections. The CCE helped nearly 2,000 students register to vote or request an absentee ballot and nearly 400 students turned out to vote at the on-campus polling place, a 117% increase over 2015 turnout. Binghamton University has seen steady increases in turnout during local, state and federal elections, including a 23.2% increase from the 2014 to 2018 midterm elections. The CCE collaborates with campus and community partners to lead a comprehensive voter engagement initiative, including voter registration during new student orientation, classroom presentations, distribution of voter registration forms to off-campus apartment communities, a free texting service, stamps for absentee ballot mailing, assistance at the on-campus polling place and more. Students also had opportunities to learn about the issues and candidates through a free shuttle to the Broome County District Attorney Debate and Pipe Dream’s election coverage and candidate questionnaires.
