UDiversity Educational Institute

During this quarter, the UDiversity Educational Institute provided 23 trainings (15 workshops for students, five workshops for staff, two workshops for faculty and one workshop for community members) with a total of 465 participants (149 undergraduate students, 155 graduate students, 39 faculty, 104 staff, and 24 community members). DEI provided its Building Bridges to Cultural Competency Phase I workshop, which examined ways to build cultural awareness for students on campus. In addition, DEI collaborated with Residential Life’s Campus Partner Program by providing monthly cultural competency training to residential life communities throughout the semester.

The UDiversity Educational Institute piloted a program known as “A Seat at the Table: Diversity Dialogues” with the intention of creating a grounded space for students, faculty and staff to converse about issues related to diversity and inclusion on a monthly basis. During the fall 2019 semester, 10 UDiversity Peers were hired to facilitate dialogues and were trained on intergroup dialogue facilitation and conflict resolution. The purpose(s) of this dialogue series is to:

  • Foster relationships between students, faculty and staff on campus through continuous dialogues throughout the academic year.
  • Encourage student leadership by providing facilitation opportunities to students who are passionate about diversity and/or inclusion.
  • Establish a space for campus constituents to safely express their thoughts and exchange perspectives.

UDiversity also facilitated a workshop series on “Ensuring Wellness for all Patients” with Decker Student Health Services. This particular series was created to assist the medical director in his initiative(s) to educate and inform health services staff on cultural competent medical care. Topics included ways to improve communication across cultural identities, culturally inclusive bedside manner and inclusive organizational structure.
