Another record-setting GPA for student-athletes

One semester after setting a record for highest grade-point average in more than two decades, Binghamton student-athletes equaled that lofty 3.29 mark in fall 2019. The figure, well above that of the University’s general student population, also makes it five straight semesters with a 3.2 or higher.

The record-tying GPA also marks the 15th consecutive semester that the group surpassed the 3.10 mark.

“The academic achievements of Binghamton University student-athletes continues to be stellar, especially considering the high standards and academic rigor at this world-class institution,” Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott said. “The dedication of our student-athletes and the coaches and staff that support their efforts is evidenced by this superb accomplishment.”

Almost 72 percent of student-athletes (320 individuals) recorded a 3.0 or higher GPA and more than half (245) posted a 3.3 or higher. Further, more than 42 percent held down a 3.5 or higher.

The women’s lacrosse team won its first Academic Cup, given to the team with the highest grade-point average. Head coach Stephanie Allen’s squad of 30 had a 3.62 team GPA to take the title away from eight-time champion women’s tennis. Seven individual team members achieved a perfect 4.0.

The men’s swimming an diving team had the highest GPA for men’s teams with a 3.47.

Individually, 27 student-athletes representing 12 different teams had a 4.0 GPA in the spring.

Binghamton student-athletes have reached the 3.0 plateau 28 consecutive semesters (14 years) dating back to 2005.
