UDiversity Educational Institute, spring 2020

During this quarter, the UDiversity Educational Institute provided 15 workshops (nine for students, two for staff, three for faculty/staff and one for community members) with a total of 608 participants (509 undergraduate students, 23 graduate students, six faculty, 46 staff and 24 community members). Campus groups that received cultural competency training included the Student Association, the Pipe Dream editorial staff and the Student Association Financial Board. Furthermore, the UDiversity Educational Institute initiated a racial healing series for faculty, staff and students with the intention of exploring racial trauma in the U.S. and intergenerational trauma, and discussing ways to work toward healing.

In addition, the institute hosted its first UDiversity Dialogue in February. UDiversity Peers were hired to facilitate dialogues and were trained on intergroup dialogue facilitation and conflict resolution to prepare a campus-wide dialogue to discuss issues around diversity, inclusivity, marginalization and identity. DEI collaborated with Residential Life’s Campus Partner Program by providing monthly cultural competency training to residential life communities throughout the semester and providing a workshop that focused on Best Practices for Campus Speech. Finally, UDiversity Educational Institute also assisted the Student Association during its spring leadership training by facilitating various cultural competency activities. Over 400 student organization presidents and vice presidents were present and trained on cultural awareness and student leadership on campus.
