Construction update summer 2020

Summer projects

Work to create additional parking spaces in lot M1 was completed in late June. A paving project targeting several parking lots and roads is underway. Work has been finished in a number of areas including a section of West Drive from the Engineering Building to the intersection with East Access Road and the Connector Road. Other areas that will receive new paving including lots M5, W, Z and X and will be complete by the end of the summer. A project to replace street lighting with more energy efficient LED lighting is active along the Connector Road. Outdoor lighting will also be replaced at the Anderson Center main entrance. Fire alarm upgrades are taking place in the Newing Community, Mountainview and CIW. In the Hillside Community, some areas are receiving new tubs, flooring and doors. Boilers and hot water tanks are being replaced in Darien and Evangola in Hillside. Mohawk Hall in CIW will be painted. In May, preventive maintenance work took place during a week-long shutdown of the campus high temperature hot water system. In June, a wide-scale electrical shutdown affecting several buildings also took place to perform preventive maintenance work.

Other Physical Facilities efforts this summer have been devoted to Restarting Binghamton. The Sign Shop has been busy installing hundreds of signs. Crews are also busy deploying hand sanitizing stations throughout campus.

Decker School of Nursing and Health Sciences

Flooring and ceilings are nearly complete on floors two through four. Restroom fixtures are being installed on floors two through four as well. Casework is also progressing on those floors. Final painting will soon be underway in those areas. Restroom tile work is moving ahead on the first floor. Work on lighting, fire alarm systems and devices is taking place throughout the building. The elevator shaft is being constructed. Doors will be shipped in early July and installed in the coming months. Kitchen equipment has been delivered. Outside there is work on the snowmelt system and the sidewalks that will incorporate them. Sod has been installed and some trees and other landscaping has taken place.

Hinman Dining Hall

The installation of new underground utilities is mostly complete. Stone piers have been poured for the foundation of the addition and forming of the foundation walls for the addition is underway. The north and south roof slabs have been poured. New steel for the existing building is in place and metal decking work continues. Masonry work is active on the lower level of the building. The boiler room has been gutted and new boilers will be installed in the coming months. Air handling units will also be set in place. Miscellaneous electrical, plumbing and mechanical work is taking place throughout the site.

Cleveland Hall

The Cleveland Hall renovation is nearing completion. Doors and hardware are being installed on the upper two floors and solid surface countertops and stainless steel sinks are being set in place in suites. Work on the main entry ceiling is continuing. Flooring is underway in suite bedrooms along with painting. Valance enclosures, coils and piping installation is progressing and ductwork on lower floors is moving ahead. Work is also taking place on control wiring for devices. Plumbing fixtures are being set on the lower two floors. Electrical rough-in work continues in the basement and piping for bathroom and light fixtures is advancing. The sprinkler system has been tested and work continues for the mechanical system hook-ups in the mechanical room. Exterior curbs are installed and site restoration and paving will be completed soon.

Engineering Building renovations

Furniture installation is wrapping up in offices and labs. Work on the third floor classroom-to-conference space conversion is advancing. Painting and finishing work is underway in the commons area and flooring and lighting work will soon begin. Demo for the elevator replacement is taking place. Final boiler connections and emergency generator testing is underway. A lot of site work has taken place including sodding and installation of trees and other plantings.

Science 2 renovation

Work is well underway on interior finishes including installation of casework and laboratory furnishings. New metal exterior paneling is complete on the north, east and south side of the tower with the west side due for completion in early July. The contractor is currently framing the chemistry wing to prepare for exterior paneling.

Steam generator replacement project

Work to install a new steam generator for the sciences is underway, with completion expected later this summer.
