Construction update fall 2020

Some major capital construction projects have wrapped up or are in the final stages of completion and a number of summer projects were completed.

Science 2 Phase 1 renovation

This project renovated the east wing of Science 2 and also provided new exterior siding and windows to the Science 2 wings and tower, greatly improving energy efficiency. In addition, new undergraduate laboratories, classrooms and restrooms are now available in the east wing. The bid to renovate spaces in the Science 2 tower was recently awarded and work will be underway this fall. Tower work will include gutting spaces on floors three through eight with complete renovation of that space. A number of critical maintenance items will be addressed, including asbestos abatement and new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems.

Engineering Building phases 4 and 5

Like the Science 2 project, this renovation involved providing new energy efficient windows and metal panels cladding the exterior. Inside, 66,000 square-feet of space was renovated. There are new classrooms, common spaces, offices and restrooms. There is a new entrance adjacent to the walkway from the University Union. New landscaping was included in the project, which was driven by the need to address new programs and critical maintenance items. As a result, there are new electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems. There is also a new emergency generator.

Institute for Child Development addition

A single-story addition was constructed on the southwest side of the Institute for Child Development. The project created a new multipurpose room allowing a multipurpose room in the existing building to be converted into two classrooms.

Cleveland Hall renovation

The renovation of Cleveland Hall is substantially complete. The contractor is addressing punch list items while the campus completes tasks such as signage and lock installations. New furniture will be installed and the building will be available for occupancy in the spring semester. Due to the renovation, Cleveland now has air conditioning service along with new electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems. The building has new windows. This project reconfigured all baths including six ADA-accessible suite baths. Flooring was removed and replaced. All windows and glass storefronts were replaced with energy-efficient systems. New building insulation was installed along with a new roof.

Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences

Construction work will wrap up in early October. Equipping and furnishing the building will follow. The renovation of the first four floors created classrooms, simulation labs, offices, advising and conference space, an information commons, food service and public space for the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences. These spaces will be available for the spring semester. The bid was recently awarded for renovation of the fourth and fifth floors and construction will get underway this fall. These floors will house the new physical, occupational, and speech and language therapy programs, as well as space for a joint partnership with Upstate Medical University. Completion is expected in summer 2021.

Hinman Dining Hall renovation

The outlines of the addition to the Hinman Dining Hall are now visible with completion of the foundation of the 25,500 square-foot addition and steel installation underway. New mortar, glass and walls are being constructed on the existing structure. The contractor has poured the concrete floors for the addition. The addition is three floors and will house a new lounge, restrooms, program and retail space. The project also involves complete renovation/reconfiguration of the original building including new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Work is scheduled for completion in summer 2021.

Two major projects got underway in late summer.

Science 4 phase 2 renovation

The Science 4 phase 2 renovation got underway in late August. The contractor has established a staging area and asbestos abatement and demo are underway. Work involves renovation of offices, labs and support space. New electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems are also part of the scope of work. The project will provide surge space to facilitate the phase one renovation of Science 3. This project renovates the west side of Science 4 and the work is similar to what occurred when the east side of the building was renovated two years ago. Project completion is expected in early 2022.

Baseball stadium complex

Work also got underway in August on the new baseball stadium complex. The site is fenced and a staging area is established. The contractor has removed the bleachers and other demolition work is progressing. The project includes a new baseball stadium, clubhouse, indoor training facility, increased seating, locker rooms, batting cages, offices, study areas and athletic training room. Project completion is slated for early 2022.

Summer projects

A project that created 86 additional parking spaces in lot M1 was completed over the summer. In addition, several other parking lots and roads received new pavement including a section of West Drive from the Engineering Building to the intersection with East Access Road, East Access Road and the Connector Road. Other areas that received new paving were lots M5, W, Z, and lot X. Access roads around the Y lots were also paved. A project replaced street lighting with more energy efficient LED lighting along the Connector Road. Outdoor lighting was replaced at the Anderson Center main entrance. Energy efficient lighting was also installed in the East Gym gymnasium space. Fire alarm upgrades took place in the Newing, Mountainview and CIW communities. In the Hillside Community, some areas received new tubs, flooring and doors. Boilers and hot water tanks were replaced in Darien and Evangola in Hillside. Mohawk Hall in CIW was painted.
