Student-athletes return to practice

There may be no formal athletic competitions on campus this fall but for the Binghamton teams, the past two weeks have been a victory in other ways. The Bearcats teams have started practice again on their fields and courts.

The process of returning to practice is starting with small groups of each team. If things continue to progress, the plan is for entire teams to begin practicing soon.

The student-athletes at Binghamton were disappointed to have the fall portion of their seasons postponed, but they are happy to be back with their coaches and teammates on a daily basis.

“There was nothing I missed more than being back on the court with my teammates and coaches,” junior women’s basketball player Hayley Moore said. “It is definitely different with the masks and all the social distancing rules, but nothing beats getting to work with my basketball family and preparing for our upcoming season. I’m excited for what’s to come with this team and to keep working hard day by day.”

“It feels incredible to be back on the field,” senior baseball player Daniel Franchi said. “Everyone on the team has been looking forward to playing ball with each other do way to long and it’s just great to be able to practice and play with this team again. We are continuing to do our part to keep everyone healthy and are just hoping we can continue to practice through the rest of the semester.”

Women’s basketball finalizes staff

The Binghamton women’s basketball program has announced the hiring of Maggie Moore as its Coordinator of Player Development. She arrives from Albany, where she has been the graduate assistant on the staff since 2018.

In addition, she served as the interim Coordinator of Player Development during her first season, until the position was filled in the spring of 2019.

“Maggie comes to us from a big basketball family,” head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. “We are excited about her ability to help our program from an organizational standpoint. She also has two years of experience in our league and is going to be very valuable on our staff.”

“I am very thankful and honored to have the opportunity to join Coach Ord and her staff here at Binghamton University,” Moore said. “This is an amazing opportunity to learn and grow under the success of Coach Ord and I am very excited to be a part of the Bearcat Family.”

Men’s basketball ready for unique season (season preview)

A strong sophomore class is expected to lead Binghamton basketball into the 2020-21 season – a season whose length and make-up will no doubt be affected by the pandemic.

Ninth-year head coach Tommy Dempsey returns two starters and seven letterwinners from last winter’s squad that led the America East in 3-pointers (9.6/game, 20th in nation) and ranked third in scoring. However, with the departure of point guard Sam Sessoms (19.4 ppg.) and graduated senior starters Pierre Sarre and Richard Caldwell, BU will have to replace 55% of its offensive production and 48% of its rebounding.

Student-athletes spread cheer for the holidays

Before leaving for the semester break, the Binghamton Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) saw to it that people left Christmas gifts at the Events Center before they departed campus.

For years, Binghamton’s SAAC has taken part in the Adopt a Family for Christmas program. Despite the difficult fall semester in terms of adjusting to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was determined to continue that tradition.

The Adopt-A-Family For Christmas program is sponsored by several national organizations, including the Salvation Army, Toys for Tots and Catholic Charities. In the case of Binghamton’s SAAC leaders who organized the event, they went through the Family Enrichment Network of Greater Binghamton.

From there, Binghamton’s SAAC was paired of with a family in need. It was provided with a wish list of needs, sizes and interests of their adopted family. While some requests were specific, other interests inspired brainstorming among the group.
