Diversity Empowerment Education Program (DEEP)
December 29, 2020
The mission of this program embedded in Residential Life is to promote student engagement through a social justice lens for underrepresented minority students. DEEP Interns from Binghamton University’s Department of Social Work provide underrepresented students with wrap-around services and support in our residential communities. This reciprocal learning model promotes academic success and student retention with a focus on improving student wellness, advancing intersectional equity and improving community cohesion.
Some examples of what the DEEP interns can help students with are:
- Assisting residents with affirming and celebrating intersectional identities
- Assisting residents with resolving roommate or interpersonal conflict arising out of bias or in-general conflicts
- Meeting with residents in distress or in need of assistance
- Connecting residents with resources available on campus
- Working with residents and professional staff to effectively communicate issues and promote community wellness
