Lou DePrez of the Binghamton University wrestling team became an NCAA All-American Friday afternoon at NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. The 184-pound redshirt junior rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to defeat Minnesota’s Owen Webster by a 6-1 decision to vault himself to the podium.

Now the sixth All-American in Binghamton’s Division l history, DePrez also joins elite company as the second Bearcat to obtain multiple All-America honors (Justin Lister, 2010, 2011).

“The mental toughness he showed today was everything,” head coach Kyle Borshoff said. “He is not one of those guys to go crazy when he becomes an All-American because he has that goal of becoming a National Champion, but the way he rebounded from that loss was incredibly important.”

In DePrez’s first match, he took on John Poznanski of Rutgers. DePrez recorded an early takedown in the first, but Poznowski earned one back in the second. In the third period, with the bout tied at four, Ponanski recorded a late takedown and two near fall points to get an 8-4 decision. Seconds prior, Binghamton challenged a a no takedown call against DePrez and it was upheld.

In the consolation bracket, DePrez needed a win to reach the podium, and he took control in the second period against Minnesota’s Webster. An escape led to a takedown and a critical 3-0 advantage heading to the third. Another takedown and an extra ride time point led the way to a 6-1 decision and the second straight All-America nod for DePrez.

In his final match of the evening DePrez dropped a 7-1 decision to Northern Illinois’ Brit Wilson.

DePrez will face No. 5 seeded Hunter Bolen of Virginia Tech in the seventh place match tomorrow. Wrestling will resume at 11 a.m., with the conclusion of the tournament at 7 p.m.
