UDiversity Educational Institute, summer 2021

During this quarter, the UDiversity Educational Institute provided 18 workshops (13 virtual workshops for students, five virtual workshops for staff and faculty) with a total of 412 participants (339 undergraduate students, 13 graduate students, 42 faculty and 18 staff). The UDiversity Educational Institute hosted two campus-wide Building Bridges to Cultural Competency Phase I workshops for faculty, staff and students. These workshops examined additional ways to build cultural awareness and foster inclusivity on campus.

The UDiversity Educational Institute collaborated with several student organizations this quarter to provide cultural competency workshops. Organizations included a Greek Life organization (Phi Mu Sorority), Harpur’s Ferry, Pipe Dream, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE).

UDiversity initiated its diversity education workshop series, Inclusive Organizations, with the faculty and staff in the chemistry and biological sciences departments. During this series, the departments explored team power dynamics and practices, their influence on organizational culture, and how to create inclusive policies and programs within those respective departments.

UDiversity continues to review and further develop its suite of workshop offerings. For example, in fall 2020, the coordinators are preparing for a deliberative dialogue program that focuses on civic engagement with students. The program is titled Whose Rights? Inclusion and the First Amendment Deliberation. Campus partners include the Center for Civic Engagement, Multicultural Resource Center, Binghamton Speech and Debate, Binghamton Scholars Program, Student Association and Graduate Student Organization.

Additionally, UDiversity worked with campus staff to provide cultural competency sessions for their respective programs and or classes. Those sessions were completed for the following programs: New Student Programs, Fleishman Center interns, and the Newing Leadership class.

UDiversity also concluded its Racial Healing seminar series for faculty, staff and students for the spring semester. The constituency groups met virtually biweekly for two hours to engage in transformative dialogue around racial identity, racial socialization and racial trauma.
