Violence, Abuse and Rape Crisis Center established on campus (VARCC)

Housed in a calm, private space in the center of campus, the Violence, Abuse and Rape Crisis Center (VARCC) opened this spring, providing a single place for students to report an incident of sexual violence and receive the support they need.

Several key resources are colocated in the VARCC, allowing them to provide an efficient and coordinated response. The center is staffed on a rotating basis by a sexual assault advocate, the deputy Title IX coordinator, a bystander training coordinator, a counselor specializing in trauma recovery, the Crime Victims Assistance Center (CVAC) and other relevant service providers, like the Binghamton University Interfaith Council. Closer partnerships with external resources, like the CVAC, will provide students with greater access to support after hours and on weekends.

The VARCC is also meant to be a safe, comfortable space that provides opportunities for healing through personal support, art therapy, journaling, crafting, etc. The University worked closely with students to determine the framework for the VARCC, incorporating feedback on what they felt were essential services that should be offered.

The VARCC, which is located on the third floor of Old Johnson Hall, is open by appointment only this summer and will resume regular hours when students return in the fall. Find more information on the VARCC website.
