After a hiatus last academic year due to the pandemic, Binghamton University Police (UPD) returned to in-person community policing activities this semester. UPD has done 376 community policing outreach events so far this year, including educational programs, RA checks and overall interactions with the community.

Other activities have included:

  • Four “Coffee and Cookies with UPD” events at the Pharmacy School, Health Sciences Building, University Downtown Center and in front of The Union on Veterans Day.
  • A tabling event in The Union promoting our Breast Cancer Awareness Month fund drive/pin sale, which collected $875 in donations given to the American Cancer Society. These events were advertised and promoted on B-Line and Dateline.
  • Participation in two drug take-back events with the Pharmacy School. Both were successful and provided an opportunity for community members to safely dispose of prescription medicines that have expired or are no longer needed.
  • A successful Bearded Broome (No-Shave November) campaign that raised $8,182 ($3,000 more than the second-place Binghamton Police Department). The money was donated to Broome County CHOW on Dec. 2.
  • Holding its annual Toys for Tots activities with the first event — the “Fill the Cruiser” event — on Saturday, Dec. 4, kicking off this year’s campaign.

In addition, local and University media reported on Binghamton University Security Services Assistant Amir Aslamkhan, who took unpaid leave from his position with the University Police to act as an interpreter for Afghan refugees, mostly children.
