UDiversity Educational Institute, winter 2021

During this quarter, the UDiversity Educational Institute provided 45 workshops (34 for students and 10 virtual workshops for staff and faculty) with a total of 2,246 participants (1,955 undergraduate students, 118 graduate students, 66 faculty and 122 staff). The UDiversity Educational Institute conducted its Building Bridges to Cultural Competency workshops for students within UNIV 101 courses and student employees of the Center for Civic Engagement, Fleishman Center, Student Association, Athletics, Pipe Dream, Master of Public Administration, WHRW, Residential Life, Fraternity and Sorority Life organizations (Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Omega Epsilon, Lambda Alpha Upsilon), Chemistry Department faculty and staff, and faculty and staff campus wide. In addition, UDiversity provided an inaugural cultural competency series for Sociology 100 (first-year students). These workshops examined ways to build cultural awareness and foster inclusivity on campus.

The UDiversity Educational Institute collaborated with Harpur’s Ferry to provide a cultural competency workshop on diversity, equity and inclusion in emergency medicine as part of its annual conference. UDiversity provided its diversity education workshop series, Inclusive Organizations, as well. Participants included faculty from Middle Eastern and Ancient Mediterranean Studies. During this series, the department explored team power dynamics and practices, their influence on organizational culture, and how to create inclusive policies and programs within their respective department.

The UDiversity Educational Institute provided training to the Panhellenic Council and its entire membership on Inclusive Recruitment. In regard to addressing cultural issues within Greek life, UDiversity provided a workshop “Creating Inclusion in Greek Life” that focused on cultural dynamics and anti-hazing. It also provided cultural competency education focusing on inclusive and equitable healthcare and wellness for the Decker School of Nursing and the Master of Public Health program. For new faculty, UDiversity, provided its Inclusive Pedagogy Series. The three-session workshop series covered topics such as creating an inclusive syllabus, the need for dialogue in the classroom and ensuring academic success.

UDiversity executed its deliberative dialogue program, which focuses on civic engagement with students. The program “Whose Rights? Inclusion and the First Amendment Deliberation” examined ways to address these important issues on campus. Campus partners included the Center for Civic Engagement, Multicultural Resource Center, Binghamton Speech and Debate, Binghamton Scholars Program, Student Association and Graduate Student Organization.

In addition, UDiversity provided training for Mountainview College student and professional staff on ways to create inclusion within the residential communities. This is part of the ongoing diversity, equity and inclusion work that the department has been implementing through its partnership with UDiversity.
