Runners Mackay, Schaffer wrapping up stellar careers

The first time Emily Mackay and Dan Schaffer were classmates, they were too young to remember it. During the 2003-04 school year, they were in the same kindergarten class at Maine Memorial School, which is located in the Binghamton area.

From there, the two of them grew up in separate school districts. Mackay graduated from Union-Endicott High School in 2016 while Schaffer graduated from Maine-Endwell High School that same year. Since they were both standouts in track & field and cross country, they knew of each other but never really got a chance to get to know each other.

Senior Spotlight: Runner Matt Goyden

Matt Goyden’s five years of running men’s cross-country and track and field at Binghamton University has been nothing short of exemplary. Not only has Goyden excelled as an athlete and a team player, this Endwell, N.Y. native has a long history of academic excellence. Goyden has been a member of the Fall America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll, a member of the Spring America East Honor Roll and a member of both the Fall and Spring Athletic Director’s (AD) Honor Roll. According to Goyden, being a student-athlete has helped him develop a strong work ethic and has increased his motivation to succeed.

Senior Spotlight: Soccer player Andrew McDonnell

Four years ago, Andrew McDonnell was a senior at Smithtown (N.Y.) High School. He choose to continue his soccer and academic careers at Binghamton University because of the strong business program and Division I athletic program. In this interview, McDonnell looks back on his best moments on the field and his favorite classes as he prepares to start a financial career in New York City this coming summer.

Senior Spotlight: Cross Country runner Elisabeth Van Tassell

Elisabeth Van Tassell’s four years of running women’s cross-country and track have taught her how to balance being a student-athlete while also learning the importance of responsibility and motivation and prioritizing her mental health. This year, the first full cross country and track seasons since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic have taken place. After the uncertainty of the previous year, Van Tassell was excited to finally make more memories with her teammates while also being able to participate and shine in the America East Conference. In addition to excelling in her studies, she is involved in extracurricular activities including researching and leading numerous projects.
