Six baseball players earn America East recognition

Freshman catcher and designated hitter Evin Sullivan was named America East Rookie of the Year and first team all-conference, highlighting Binghamton baseball’s haul of awards announced by the America East Tuesday afternoon. Joining Sullivan on the first team was junior closer Jack Collins, who also was recognized on the All-Academic Team for the third straight year. Juniors Thomas Babalis and Connor Aoki were named second team all-conference and freshmen Nick Roselli and Logan Haskell joined Sullivan on the All-Rookie Team, giving BU its highest number of freshman selections in 17 years.

Baseball captures conference championship

Second-seeded Binghamton baseball captured the program’s fifth America East crown and completed a dominating postseason tournament with a 7-1 win over fourth-seeded UMass Lowell in the championship game Saturday night at Mahaney Diamond. The victory capped a 3-0 tournament for the Bearcats, who will now head to the NCAA Regionals for the fourth time in nine years and fifth time overall. The 64-team NCAA field will be announced at noon Monday on ESPN2.

America East champion Binghamton baseball will head to Stanford for the NCAA Regionals, the school learned Monday afternoon as the NCAA revealed its 64-team brackets. The Bearcats watched the live tournament reveal on ESPN2 with supporters at the team’s new stadium.

Baseball season ends with loss in California

Binghamton baseball outscored third-seeded UC Santa Barbara (44-13) from the fourth inning on but the 20th-ranked Gauchos struck early and eliminated the Bearcats (22-30) from the NCAA Regional with a 9-4 decision at Stanford’s Sunken Diamond. Binghamton outhit the Big West champions and scored four of the game’s final five runs but couldn’t dig out of an 8-0 deficit.

Baseball catcher Sullivan names Freshman All-American

Binghamton freshman catcher/DH Evin Sullivan has added to his first-year honors by being named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American Team, the organization announced Wednesday morning. Sullivan becomes the sixth Bearcat to earn the national distinction.

Softball lands four on all-conference team

Senior infielder Alli Richmond, senior utility player Sophia Pappas and freshmen outfielders Alayna Harbaugh and Sarah Rende have earned all-conference honors from the America East for the 2022 softball season. The announcement was made on Tuesday afternoon by the conference office.

Softball hosts America East Tournament

Binghamton (20-21) is the host team of the America East Tournament for the fifth time in program history. The Bearcats were also the home team in 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Binghamton is seeking its first conference title since 2015, when the tournament was hosted by Stony Brook.

Ryley White tossed a five-hit shutout and Ellie Frederick drove in a pair of runs, powering UMass Lowell (28-19) to a 3-0 win over Binghamton (22-23) in an America East Tournament game on Friday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the loss, the Bearcats finish the tournament in fourth place.

Senior infielder Alli Richmond and freshman outfielder Alayna Harbaugh have been named ECAC All-Stars for the 2022 softball season. Richmond was named to the first team at second base while Harbaugh earned honorable mention distinction.

McKeown named America East Men’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year

Binghamton men’s lacrosse coach Kevin McKeown has been named America East Coach of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday. In addition, seven Bearcats were selected to the all-conference teams. Senior Kevin Winkoff was named to the first team, senior Max Verch, redshirt junior Teddy Dolan, and redshirt sophomore Thomas Greenblatt were all named to the second team. Freshmen Lorenzo Ramos and Jack Fearnley were named to the All Rookie team. Dolan and junior Matthew Desouza were named to the All-Academic team.

Binghamton women’s lacrosse climbed back out of a 12-9 hole to tie the game late, but relinquished a goal with eight seconds left in the fourth quarter to fall to No. 2 seeded Vermont 13-12 in the America East semifinal. The Bearcats battled all evening, answering Catamount runs with their own before the final goal determined the outcome.

Graduate student Kelly Quinn of Binghamton women’s lacrosse has been selected to play in the 2022 IWLCA Senior All-Star game, as released by the IWLCA Wednesday afternoon. Quinn is one of 21 members of the North Team, and is the only America East conference member to compete in the event.

Recent graduate Emily Mackay has been named a second-team Track & Cross Country Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA). It marked the second straight year that she has earned the distinction, having earned third-team honors in 2020-21.

In her final meet wearing a Binghamton uniform, graduate student Emily Mackay placed sixth in the 1,500 at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon at Hayward Field. In the process, she clinched her fifth NCAA Division I All-America honor, which is the highest total earned by a Binghamton athlete during the program’s 21-year NCAA Division I era.

Golf finishes program-best fourth at Big Sky Championship

The Binghamton golf team closed out its 2021-22 season in historic fashion. Playing in the third and final day of the Big Sky Championships at the Talking Stick Golf Club on Wednesday, the Bearcats recorded the lowest team score for the second day in a row. In the final team standings, Binghamton placed fourth out of seven teams.

Fifth-year senior Justin Lane has been named honorable mention all-conference by the Big Sky Conference for the 2021-22 golf season. It marks the second time in his career that he has received the distinction, having earned second-team honors in 2019.

Binghamton sophomore Shourya Verma has been selected to the All-MAC second team, the conference announced on Tuesday. He was deemed one of the top 12 players in the conference and becomes BU’s 11th all-conference honoree in the program’s eight-years of membership.

Binghamton Athletics has announced the addition of CJ Werneke to the coaching staff Monday morning. Werneke, a veteran coach, has seen time as a head coach and assistant in five conferences, including the Big Ten and the BIG EAST.

Volleyball releases 2022 fall schedule

Binghamton volleyball has finalized its 2022 schedule, and will open play at home against Maryland Eastern Shore at the Bearcat Classic on August 26. The team continues play on August 27 against Boston College and Siena. The event is Binghamton’s first hosted weekend tournament since 2009.

The Binghamton men’s soccer team has released its 2022 schedule, which includes 17 regular-season matches as well as eight home dates at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats open up their campaign at the James Madison (JMU) Tournament Aug. 25-28.

Women’s soccer adds Bennett to coaching staff

Binghamton women’s soccer has hired former collegiate standout Taylor Bennett as an assistant coach, head coach Neel Bhattacharjee announced on Friday. She begins her Bearcat tenure on July 6. Bennett returns to the Southern Tier after playing professionally in Iceland for the last two years. She was a four-year starting defender at Syracuse, helping the Orange produce 21 shutouts before graduating in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in coaching.
