Students return to campus during move-in, B-Welcome programming

Residential Life successfully moved in approximately 7,000 on-campus students from Aug. 18 to 21. This was accomplished by 60 professional staff, 200 student staff, 180 BWelcome Crew members and many campus partners, including the entire New York State University Police at Binghamton department, who worked throughout the weekend.

The BWelcome initiative, sponsored by the Dean of Students Office, welcomed students for the fall semester with 262 University-wide programs, workshops and events from Aug. 16 to 28. This included 330 students who participated in Common Read discussions, engaging in conversations on the effects of big data and the algorithms that regulate everyday life in ever-increasing and often flawed and discriminatory ways. This year’s Common Read was Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy by Cathy O’Neil.

BWelcome wrapped up Aug. 27, with the annual University Fest, sponsored by the Office of Campus Activities. The event was attended by 3,500+ students and featured 225 student groups, 40 club sports, 30 on-campus departments and 20 outside vendors.
