Fall in love with Harpur during Harpur Week 2022
With programs ranging from math and the physical sciences to social sciences, the humanities, the fine and performing arts, and interdisciplinary fields, there’s a lot to love about Harpur College!
You can learn more about Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, the oldest and largest school in Binghamton University, during Harpur Week from Oct. 24 to 30.
Students will explore the many opportunities and areas of study available through Harpur College and have fun along the way. Events include a meet-the-faculty fair, department information sessions, film screenings, tours, trivia events with prizes, faculty flash talks and more.
Events take place both in person and on Zoom, so there’s something for everyone. Events may have attendance limits; students should register through B-Engaged.

Walkup event, Oct. 19
- Pasados y Futuros: A History of LACAS — 5 p.m. Oct. 19 in Old Union Hall
Ease into Harpur College Week by attending the Latin American and Caribbean Area Studies Open House! It will feature faculty presentations, alumni videos, awards for community members, tables from on-campus organizations and programs, raffles and giveaways, and pastelitos from La Isla Restaurant.
Monday, Oct. 24
- What can I do with my sociology degree? Zoom event at noon
Join Harpur Edge and the sociology faculty as they host a panel of sociology alumni in a variety of careers. You can ask questions and even foster a new mentoring relationship during this interactive event. Panelists include: Isabel Pierangelo ’20, public benefits and LGBTQ+ advocacy paralegal at Legal Services NYC; Matthew Phifer ’04, vice president of education and employment at Henry Street Settlement and more. - Education abroad drop-in advising — 1 p.m. in Old Champlain, Room 240
Did you know that Binghamton offers more than 50 education-abroad programs and that more than 1,000 options are available through SUNY? You can take courses, complete an internship, participate in a service-learning project or even conduct research almost anywhere in the world. Drop-in advising is available for students to talk with a member of the education-abroad advising team about anything related to studying abroad. Remember: It’s never too early to start planning! Have you thought about studying abroad but aren’t sure how it works? Did you know that you can pursue major, minor and/or general education credit while studying abroad? Join the Office of International Education and Global Initiatives for this 30-minute session to learn more about education-abroad programs options, the application process and earning Harpur credit abroad. - Harpur Faculty Flash Talks — 4 p.m. on Zoom
Learn something cool from four Harpur faculty members during these brief yet fascinating talks. Participants include Associate Professor Elizabeth DiGangi, who applies forensic anthropology to questions surrounding human rights violations; Associate Professor Bryan Kirschen, a sociolinguist and a nationally recognized expert in Ladino, or Judeo-Spanish; Assistant Professor of Psychology Emily Zale, who researches the connections between substance use, pain and psychopathology; and Assistant Professor of Theatre Brandon Wright, who has performed regionally in theaters throughout the East Coast and Midwest. Tuesday, Oct. 25
- Tour of art, music, theater and more – 3:30 p.m. in Watters Theater
Explore art studios, workshops and performance spaces in Binghamton’s Fine Arts Building. We will walk by classes in art history, ethnomusicology, graphic design, printmaking, sculpture, theatre’s costume and scene shops and more! Plus, see the set for the upcoming production of Into the Woods. (To enter the scene shop, you must be wearing closed-toe shoes and safety goggles.)
- Cinema Department Visiting Film/Video Artists’ Speakers Series – 7:30 p.m. in LH-6
Emmanuel Lefrant, a filmmaker and film performance artist who works at L’Abominable, an artist-run film lab in Paris, and Light Cone, one of the leading distributors of experimental film, will present his short 16mm & 35mm films for this special, one-night event.

- Make a Reversible Tote Bag – 10 a.m. in the Theatre Department costume shop
Learn about sewing machine basics and make a reversible tote bag in the costume shop. RSVP is preferred for this event, which will accommodate a maximum of 10 people; first-come, first-served will also be accepted.
- Delicious in Four Languages – 3 p.m. in LT-1310
Sample delicious desserts from different ethnic Jewish communities and learn four helpful words in Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish and Ladino (Judeo-Spanish).

Guest speaker Anne Leone, an assistant professor of Italian studies at Syracuse University, will discuss the impact of the Church’s Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 on changes to confessional practice, and how Dante and Boccaccio represent the performative nature of confession in their work.

- Russian and East European Program fireside chat – 7 p.m. in the Dickinson Fireplace Lounge
Students will share how their course learning and Binghamton experiences are helping them make sense of the world of eastern Europe, including the war in Ukraine. Expect food, warmth and good conversation.
- Graphic Novels and Comix – 7 p.m. on Zoom
Join us in conversation with Emma Jensen, a comic artist and co-director of the Sequential Artists Workshop, and Jess Rulliffson, author of the recently released Invisible Wounds: Graphic Journalism, which features graphic interviews with veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. They will discuss their paths to comics, their educational and artistic choices, the traditional publishing and independent maker side of the comix world as well as the challenge of making a living while making comics and graphic novels.

Join Harpur Edge and the Office of Alumni Engagement for an in-person lunch and learn with Timothy Auh ’02, an immigration judge, to hear about his time at Binghamton as an English major and how it prepared him for his career journey.

University of Massachusetts Professor Duncan Irschick will give the 3:30 seminar presentation, followed by a reception and faculty meet-and-greet in the E.W. Heier Teaching and Research Greenhouses at 4:30 p.m. A session on research opportunities will also be offered at 4:30 p.m., and include poster presentations on diverse projects, along with information on how undergraduate and graduate students can get involved with departmental activities.
- 2022 Romano Lecture — 3:30 p.m. in the AC-Chamber Hall
Leah Boustan, professor of economics and director of the Industrial Relations Section at Princeton University, will explore the facts — not the fiction — of America’s immigration experience and discuss her recent book Streets of Gold: America’s Untold Story of Immigrant Success.

Watch Hocus Pocus, paint pumpkins and enjoy cider and doughnuts.
- Drone Flying, Scavenger Hunt and GIS — 5 p.m. at Hinman College and Hinman Dining Center
This event is a joint venture of the Geography Department and Hinman College to introduce basic GIS to Harpur College and Hinman students via a scavenger hunt and drone-flying social activities. Food and drinks will be provided.

Sunday, Oct. 30
- Excel for Data Analytics Crash Course — 1 p.m. in LN-1302C
This crash course will prepare undergraduate and graduate students looking to gain Excel skills for use in data analytics. Participants who score 70% or better on the post-test will earn the Excel Skills for Data Analytics micro-credential, supporting their applications to internship opportunities in a variety of private and public sector organizations. No prior Excel experience is required.
