On March 11, Binghamton University’s Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences showed its gratitude to the doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and other clinicians who provide instruction, training and supervision to Decker’s nurse practitioner (NP) students during their clinical experiences.

Known as preceptors, more than two dozen of these healthcare professionals from across New York and Pennsylvania attended Decker’s seventh annual Preceptor Appreciation Day. The one-day event is typically held in person, but was held via Zoom this year based on practitioner request.

Preceptor Appreciation Day 2023 opened with Nicole Rouhana, MS ’95, PhD ’11, assistant professor of nursing and director of graduate nursing programs at Decker College. Rouhana welcomed and thanked the preceptors for their commitment to helping educate Decker College graduate nursing students. She also gave them a brief update about Decker College and the nursing program before introducing the first speaker of the day.

Mimi Secor is a board-certified family nurse practitioner specializing in women’s health and health and fitness, as well as a national speaker, educator, author and health coach. She presented an update on medical eligibility criteria for prescribing contraceptives, treatment options for sexually transmitted infections and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Wendy Wright, an adult and family nurse practitioner, gave the afternoon presentation. A highly requested speaker, Wright is an international provider of continuing education for NP certification preparation as well as the owner of two NP-managed clinics and a medical-education company. Wright presented information about the pharmacologic management of obesity throughout the lifespan, updated guidelines for managing lipid disorders and safe prescribing to avoid drug-drug interactions.

In recognition for their efforts on behalf of Decker College, participants received 6.75 hours of nursing continuing professional development at no charge.
